Overview

AthenaText uses AI-driven SMS conversations to qualify leads, score their replies and route promising prospects to a team. It is best suited to inbound, appointment-driven businesses such as home services, real estate and professional services. Its appeal is the combination of qualification, handoff and reporting; its credit limits and still-pending integrations may narrow the fit.

Key features

Conversations can run for five or more turns per lead, with human takeover that preserves context. That lets a team step in when a lead needs personal attention without losing the exchange so far. Follow-up sequences, nurture for non-responders, routing and handoff triggers support a more structured lead workflow.

The shared inbox keeps conversation history visible to the team. Qualification rates, pipeline views and per-rep throughput help managers assess both lead quality and team activity. Webhooks and API access allow qualified leads to be pushed into other tools, while HubSpot, Discord, Zapier and CSV export are available integrations. Salesforce, Slack, Google Calendar and Google Sheets are coming soon, so businesses that depend on those connections may need to wait or use another workflow.

Compliance features include opt-out handling, state quiet hours and 10DLC registration guidance, enforced automatically on every plan. AthenaText says its SOC 2 Type II audit is in progress; Enterprise adds SSO and advanced security controls. Support is by message, with a stated reply within one business day; live chat is coming soon.

Pricing

The Free plan costs $0/mo and includes no credits, AI replies or voice calls, with self-serve support. It is a limited way to get started, not a usable plan for running AI qualification campaigns.

Core costs $49/mo, or $468 billed once a year ($39/month) with annual billing. It includes 1,000 credits, unlimited AI replies, limited voice calls and standard support. This is the entry point for teams that want ongoing qualification without the higher monthly allowance or dialing features of Titan.

Titan costs $149/mo and includes 5,000 credits, unlimited AI replies and voice calls, a power dialer, priority support and up to three dialing lines per seat. It fits teams with higher outbound volume or a need for more calling capacity; the extra credits and dialing features come with a substantial price increase over Core.

Enterprise has custom pricing: $5 per seat plus per-credit rates, with 25K+ credits, unlimited AI replies, manual, power and predictive dialer modes, priority+ support and custom caps. It is aimed at organizations that need large-scale usage or advanced security controls, but the per-credit structure means costs depend on usage.

Credits cover outbound campaign sends, AI replies and manual messages; incoming lead replies are free. Unused credits do not roll over, and outbound sending pauses at the monthly limit, though incoming replies can still arrive. These terms make forecasting important for campaigns with uneven volume.

Platforms

AthenaText is available on web and through an API. The API, webhooks, two-way SMS and MMS support suit teams connecting messaging to their existing systems, but the platform list does not include dedicated mobile or desktop apps.

Who it's for

AthenaText is a strong fit for inbound businesses that qualify prospects by text, need staff to take over conversations, and want shared visibility into routing and outcomes. It is less suited to teams needing Salesforce, Slack or calendar and spreadsheet integrations immediately, or to anyone whose outbound volume risks exceeding a fixed monthly credit allowance.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multi-turn AI qualification with context-preserving human takeover supports a practical transition from automation to staff.
Pros: Shared conversation history, qualification reporting and per-rep throughput give teams a view of both lead flow and follow-up activity.
Pros: Every plan includes automatically enforced opt-out handling, state quiet hours and 10DLC registration guidance.
Cons: The Free plan has no credits or AI replies, so meaningful campaign use starts at $49/mo.
Cons: Credits expire monthly and outbound sending pauses at the cap, creating a real constraint for variable-volume campaigns.
Cons: Several common integrations, including Salesforce and Google Calendar, are coming soon rather than available now.
Cons: The SOC 2 Type II audit is in progress, which may matter to buyers with formal security requirements.

Alternatives

SMS Chatbot Software is a useful category overview for comparing options. Choose ConvoCore if a free entry point matters: its free plan includes 500 monthly credits (about 182 estimated messages), Tier 4 models and a web widget, while its Starter plan is $29 per month. Choose Gupshup for another API and web messaging option with a stated standard fee of 0.001 USD per message; WhatsApp fees are billed at actuals.

Crisp may suit teams looking for a broader platform footprint, including Android, iOS, macOS and Windows, with a free plan for two seats and unlimited conversations, but no AI credits. Jack The Butler is a free, open-source option with no per-message fees, though hosting and AI API usage may cost extra. Smobi is an option for RCS messaging billed per use, with a standard platform fee and tailored pricing.

TextIt may fit teams that prefer contact-based pricing: its paid plan is $25 per month for 1,000 messaged contacts, with additional messaged contacts at $0.01/mo. Sinch Engage offers plans framed around monthly SMS allowances and users, including 3,000 SMS/mo for one user on Basics. Sarufi is another API and web option, with a Developer plan covering 1,000 messages/month.

Verdict

AthenaText is a sound choice for appointment-driven businesses that want SMS lead qualification, a clean handoff to staff and reporting in one workflow. Its strongest reason to choose is the blend of multi-turn AI conversations and team follow-through; its strongest reason to look elsewhere is the hard monthly outbound cap, compounded by integrations that are not yet available. Core is the sensible starting plan for active use, while high-volume teams should weigh Titan or Enterprise against their credit needs.
