Overview

Armory3D connects game development to Blender through an add-on and external SDK, with portability, a small footprint and performance as its aims. The zlib/libpng license permits commercial applications subject to its restrictions, and the privacy policy says the software does not collect, market or sell user data.

This Blender connection can keep 3D creation and game development in one workflow, but it also makes Blender compatibility a practical prerequisite. The setup guide calls for Blender 4.5.x LTS and says Blender 3.3 LTS and earlier are unsupported. The SDK is distributed as a Blender add-on and external SDK; the site describes the add-on as portable and requiring no installation.

Key features

Game logic can be built with Haxe or visual logic nodes, including custom nodes. This gives programmers and node-oriented creators different ways to work, though teams expecting a different built-in scripting language should weigh the Haxe commitment. The setup guide documents Visual Studio Code with the Kha Extension pack, Kode Studio, Sublime Text and custom editors.

The scriptable renderer supports deferred and forward paths, as well as custom render paths. That flexibility is useful when a project needs a tailored rendering approach, but it also makes Armory a better fit for developers willing to shape their pipeline than for someone seeking only a fixed, ready-made rendering setup.

For interfaces, Armory includes its own UI library and editor. Physics uses Bullet for rigid and soft body simulation, with Oimo as an alternative configuration. Objects can be marked as actors to calculate real-time pathing with navigation meshes, bringing built-in tools for common game systems rather than requiring every feature to be assembled from scratch.

Animation and effects cover emitter and hair particles with GPU instancing, plus GPU skinning, bones, keyframes, shape keys and tilesheets. Lighting features include voxel-based ambient occlusion, lightmapping, area lights, reflection probes and IES textures. Multiplayer tools and console export are also supported. Together, these capabilities span a substantial range of game-development needs, while the Blender and SDK requirements remain the key workflow considerations.

Pricing

Plan	Price	Includes
Armory Engine	0.00 USD per free	Open-source engine, Blender add-on and external SDK

The free plan is the engine itself, not a time-limited trial or a reduced tier described with export restrictions. It suits individuals and teams prepared to work within Armory's Blender-based development flow. Its zlib/libpng license permits commercial use subject to its stated restrictions.

Platforms

Armory games can target Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, Android and the web. That reach makes it a candidate for projects planned across desktop, mobile and browser releases. The SDK setup guide's Blender 4.5.x LTS requirement is a separate compatibility consideration; Blender 3.3 LTS and earlier are unsupported.

Who it's for

Armory3D is best suited to developers who already want Blender in their game-production workflow and value both node-based logic and code. It is also a reasonable fit for projects that need multiple desktop, mobile or web targets, along with configurable rendering and built-in animation, physics and navigation features. Look elsewhere if Blender version compatibility or Haxe is a poor match for the team's workflow.

Pros and cons

Pros: A free, open-source engine with a license permitting commercial applications subject to its restrictions.
Pros: Blender integration alongside both Haxe scripting and visual logic nodes, including custom nodes.
Pros: Export targets span Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, Android and web, with console export also supported.
Pros: Rendering, physics, navigation, interface, animation and lighting tools cover a broad range of game needs.
Cons: The setup guide requires Blender 4.5.x LTS and excludes Blender 3.3 LTS and earlier, limiting compatibility with older installations.
Cons: Haxe is the named scripting language, so teams committed to another language may prefer a different workflow.
Cons: Using the engine means adopting its Blender add-on and external SDK setup rather than a workflow independent of Blender.

Alternatives

For a different visual-development option, Construct 3 has a free plan and trial, with a Personal License described as unlocking all features for individuals and hobbyists. GDevelop also has a free plan, including a first game at no charge, and a Silver plan billed monthly or yearly; it is worth considering if that plan structure better suits the project.

Stencyl offers a Starter plan for publishing to web/HTML5 and an Indie plan at 99.00 USD per year for web and desktop publishing. Clickteam Fusion 2.5 has a free edition with limited HTML5 export and a 99.99 USD one-time PC edition for commercial games and apps.

Flowlab may suit someone who wants a tightly capped free plan: it allows 3 games, 5 levels per game and 50 game objects, but no exporting. GameMaker has a free plan limited to non-commercial use with no console exports, alongside a Professional plan priced at 99.99 USD per month as a one-time purchase.

UPBGE is another free, open-source 3D creation suite with an integrated game engine. CopperCube offers a free editor and engine edition, with a separate Professional edition.

Verdict

Choose Armory3D if Blender is already central to your 3D workflow and you want a free, open-source engine with visual and Haxe-based logic plus broad export targets. Its main appeal is the combination of Blender integration and substantial game-development features without a purchase price. Look elsewhere if the required Blender release or Haxe does not suit your setup.
