Overview

Aithor’s Writer turns a topic prompt into essays, literature reviews, academic writing, or research, with adjustable length and tone. The service says its research database contains more than 10 million peer-reviewed, verifiable sources. That source-led approach gives it a clearer academic purpose than a general writing assistant, though generated drafts and references still need careful review before submission.

Key features

Drafting and research

Source-based writing is a central strength, and Pro adds the ability to chat with AI using sources from the database. For students and researchers, that puts drafting and research assistance in one service. Aithor also supports outline generation and 66 languages, broadening its use beyond English-language essays.

Citations and editing

The Writer supports MLA, APA, IEEE, AMA, ACS, Chicago, Harvard, and Vancouver citations. That range can save time when moving between common academic styles, while the separate Citation Generator provides another route to references. The AI Detector, Humanizer, Paraphraser, Grammar Checker, and Topic Generator round out the toolkit; these are useful additions for revising and developing ideas, not a substitute for checking accuracy or meeting an institution’s requirements.

Humanizer and API

Aithor does not promise that Humanizer output will be 100% undetectable. It reports around 85% human-written scores in most of its English and Spanish tests after use, so anyone relying on the tool to avoid detection should treat the result as uncertain.

The Humanizer and Detector APIs offer customized API keys, documentation, and dedicated technical assistance with priority support. Usage-based credits are charged by word count: about 133 credits per 1,000 Humanizer words and 67 per 1,000 Detector words, with a five-credit minimum per request. Monthly credits expire rather than rolling over, a significant constraint for teams with uneven workloads.

Pricing

Basic

Basic is free at 0.00 USD per free. It includes limited content generation and AI editing, plus free Humanizer, Detector, and Paraphraser tools. Free accounts have limited paper generation and word allowances for some tools, and users may have to wait in line. This is a sensible way to try the service or handle occasional writing, but the caps and possible queues make it a poor fit for regular, time-sensitive work.

Pro

Pro costs 7.50 USD per month, billed twice a year. It provides unlimited content generation with auto-citations, unlimited Humanizer, Detector, Paraphraser, and AI editing, plus source-based AI chat, writing-style and reference-style selection, and a table-of-contents tool. It is the stronger fit for sustained use, but the twice-yearly billing commitment is worth weighing against the free tier if your workload is sporadic. After cancellation, subscribers retain access to AI features until the current billing period ends.

API pricing

API pricing is custom and usage-based. Because credits are calculated per request, have a five-credit minimum, and expire monthly, teams should consider their expected volume and consistency before adopting it for production workflows.

Platforms

Aithor is available on the web and through an API. The API is aimed at integrating Humanizer or Detector into other products and workflows; it is not a substitute for the web Writer’s broader drafting and source-based features.

Who it's for

Aithor best suits students, researchers, and professionals who want drafting, source-based writing, citations, and editing in one place. Its API is aimed at teams working with AI-assisted writing at scale, including SEO, content marketing, copywriting, websites, newsletters, feeds, and blogs. Readers who need predictable turnaround on a free plan, or who cannot use expiring API credits efficiently, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros

Source-based drafting and chat draw on a database Aithor says holds more than 10 million peer-reviewed, verifiable sources.
Eight citation formats and a broad set of editing tools address several stages of academic writing in one service.
Pro removes stated generation and tool limits and includes writing and reference style controls.
The API offers customized keys, technical assistance, and priority support for teams integrating Humanizer or Detector.

Cons

Free accounts face limited allowances and possible queues, reducing their usefulness for regular or deadline-driven work.
Pro is billed twice a year, so its monthly price does not mean month-to-month billing.
API credits expire monthly, and the five-credit request minimum can make low-volume or irregular usage less efficient.
Humanizer results are not guaranteed to be undetectable, limiting its appeal to anyone seeking certainty on that point.

Alternatives

SciSpace is an alternative for readers who prefer a monthly credit-based basic plan and extension or iOS access.
EssayGenius may fit writers who value a free plan with one full essay draft and Word or PDF export.
Jenni AI is an alternative for readers seeking a web, iOS, or Android writing tool with a capped free tier.
Kahubi may suit users who want a free plan with AI messages, projects, and a one-time transcription trial.
Truessay is a more focused choice if you only need a free citation finder that returns five peer-reviewed papers with DOIs and does not write papers.
Conch AI Citation Generator is a narrower option for free APA, MLA, or Chicago citations for websites, books, and academic journals without signing up.

Verdict

Aithor is a strong fit for students and researchers who want source-led drafting, citation support, and editing tools together, with Pro making sense for frequent users who can justify twice-yearly billing. Choose another service if you need reliable free access without queues, guaranteed Humanizer results, or API credits that carry over between months.
