What VaultNote is
VaultNote is an encrypted Markdown note app that can keep notes on a device or optionally sync them to a GitHub repository the user owns. It has a rich WYSIWYG editor and a Markdown editor with live preview. Notes can be organized with folders and tags, starred, pinned, searched, sorted, and filtered. A browser extension saves bookmarks in one click and can retrieve their titles, descriptions, and favicons. GitHub sync uses OAuth device flow, supports repository and branch selection, and does not require a personal access token. Automatic sync can be set for intervals of 2, 5, or 10 minutes. The site says synced notes are encrypted on the device with AES-256-CBC before they leave it, and that the master password is never stored. Fingerprint or face unlock is supported. Notes can be shared through public, secret, or password-protected GitHub Gists, and exported in Markdown. VaultNote is open source under AGPL-3.0 and supports Windows, Linux, Android, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Its free plan costs nothing, with no subscriptions or hidden fees. Forgotten master passwords cannot be recovered for encrypted notes.
