Portworx PX-DR
Portworx PX-DR is paid disaster recovery software for Kubernetes applications, OpenShift applications, and KubeVirt virtual machines.
What Portworx PX-DR is
Portworx PX-DR is paid disaster recovery software for Kubernetes applications, OpenShift applications, and KubeVirt virtual machines. It orchestrates failover to a destination cluster after disruption and failback when the source cluster returns. Synchronous replication is designed for clusters in the same metro region, automatically copying production changes for zero RPO and an RTO under 60 seconds; node-to-node latency must be under 10 ms. Asynchronous DR uses scheduled policies for different regions or data centers, including latency above 10 ms, with a stated 15-minute RPO and RTO under 60 seconds. ACM-based DR integrates with Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for managed OpenShift clusters and can be configured from the OpenShift console, with workflows managed through GitOps. Recovery can cover on-premises, public-cloud, hybrid, and multicloud environments. PX-DR requires Portworx storage services because replication occurs at the storage level. The add-on’s price is available on request, and a fully functional trial license lasts up to 30 days.
Good
- Synchronous zero-RPO replication
- Asynchronous regional recovery policies
- Failover and failback orchestration
- OpenShift console and GitOps integration
- Supports hybrid and multicloud recovery
Watch out
- Requires Portworx storage services
- Synchronous mode needs under 10 ms latency
- Pricing is available only on request
- No free plan
Who it suits
PX-DR suits organizations running container workloads that need cluster-level disaster recovery across local, cloud, or mixed environments. It is especially relevant to Kubernetes, OpenShift, and KubeVirt deployments using Portworx storage.
Verdict
PX-DR provides distinct synchronous and asynchronous recovery models with stated recovery objectives and workload failover. Portworx storage dependency, enterprise pricing, and latency requirements shape where it fits.
