What Monitorix is
Monitorix is a free, open-source tool for monitoring system resources and services on production Linux and UNIX servers, and it can also run on embedded devices. Supported systems include GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD. It is self-hosted and consists mainly of a Perl daemon that collects data and a CGI script, with a built-in HTTP server listening on port 8080/TCP by default. Monitorix tracks load, active processes, memory allocation, entropy, uptime, and kernel usage globally and per processor. It can graph hardware and sensor readings for CPU, GPU, disk, NVMe, IPMI, and ambient sensors, with alerts for several sensor types. Service statistics cover tools including Apache, Nginx, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, mail and DNS servers, and UPS software. Multihost monitoring supports an unlimited number of remote servers. Users can view statistics by hour, day, week, month, or year, receive email reports of all graphs, and set historical data duration without a stated limit. Graphs can be generated in PNG or SVG, with plain text tables also available.
Good
- Free and open source under GNU GPL version 2
- Supports four listed Linux and BSD systems
- Multihost monitoring supports unlimited remote servers
- Graphs available as PNG or SVG
Watch out
- Self-hosted deployment is required
- Built-in HTTP server listens on port 8080/TCP by default
Who it suits
Monitorix suits administrators monitoring production Linux or UNIX servers who can host the software themselves. Its embedded-device suitability and multihost support may also fit those monitoring smaller devices or multiple remote servers.
Verdict
Monitorix provides broad resource and service monitoring, including multihost graphs, at no cost under GNU GPL version 2. It is a self-hosted tool, so it fits users prepared to run and configure their own monitoring service.
