What Google Cloud Workflows is
Google Cloud Workflows is a managed cloud platform for coordinating Google Cloud services, custom services, and HTTP APIs in an order you define. Workflows use YAML or JSON definitions with ordered steps, conditions, loops, parallel actions, and reusable subworkflows. Start runs manually, through client libraries or REST, or on a schedule with Cloud Scheduler. Connectors integrate with Google Cloud APIs such as Pub/Sub, Firestore, and Secret Manager; workflow steps can also make HTTP or HTTPS requests to custom and private endpoints. Reliability features include retries, polling, error handling, callbacks, and waits of up to one year. IAM controls access, and Cloud Logging and Cloud Monitoring provide execution logs, volume, error-rate, and execution-time visibility. Pricing is based on executed steps, including failed and retried steps, while idle workflows incur no charges. The Always Free plan includes 5,000 internal and 2,000 external steps monthly. Executions are limited to 100,000 steps and one year.
Good
- Supports ordered, conditional, looping, and parallel steps.
- Executions can start manually, programmatically, or on a schedule.
- Retries, error handling, and callbacks are included.
- Idle workflows do not accrue charges.
- Always Free includes 5,000 internal and 2,000 external steps monthly.
Watch out
- No visual workflow builder.
- Executions are limited to 100,000 steps.
- Maximum execution duration is one year.
- Pricing counts failed and retried steps.
Who it suits
Workflows suits teams orchestrating cloud services, APIs, batch jobs, or business and IT processes. It may fit those comfortable defining workflows in YAML or JSON and working within step and duration limits.
Verdict
Google Cloud Workflows provides defined orchestration with scheduling, connectors, and execution monitoring. Its step-based pricing and execution limits are important to account for when choosing it.
