Espressif-IDE
Espressif-IDE is a desktop IDE for developing IoT applications with ESP-IDF, built on Eclipse CDT.
What Espressif-IDE is
Espressif-IDE is a desktop IDE for developing IoT applications with ESP-IDF, built on Eclipse CDT. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows and supports C and C++. Project wizards can start a project from scratch or from more than 100 ESP-IDF examples. The LSP-based editor provides completion, navigation, and real-time diagnostics; build support uses ESP-IDF’s CMake system and includes a visual Kconfig editor. Its ESP-IDF Manager can install and switch among multiple ESP-IDF versions. For device work, it supports UART, JTAG, and DFU flashing, along with OpenOCD-over-JTAG and GDB stub debugging, core dump analysis, heap tracing, and application tracing. A serial monitor, ESP-IDF terminal, and Wokwi Simulator support are also included. The IDE is free as a standalone installer or as a plugin for an existing Eclipse installation. Version 3.0 and later works with ESP-IDF 5.x and above; ESP-IDF 4.x and earlier requires Espressif-IDE 2.12.1. Anonymous usage statistics are on by default but can be disabled.
Good
- Project wizards include more than 100 ESP-IDF examples.
- Editor provides completion, navigation, and real-time diagnostics.
- Manages multiple ESP-IDF versions.
- Supports UART, JTAG, and DFU flashing.
- Wokwi Simulator support enables virtual ESP32 firmware testing.
Watch out
- Version 3.0 and later requires ESP-IDF 5.x or above.
- ESP-IDF 4.x and earlier requires Espressif-IDE 2.12.1.
- Anonymous usage statistics are enabled by default.
Who it suits
Espressif-IDE suits developers building IoT applications with ESP-IDF who want project setup, editing, builds, flashing, and debugging in one desktop environment. It supports both C and C++ across Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Verdict
Espressif-IDE covers much of the ESP-IDF workflow, from creating projects through debugging and monitoring. Check the version compatibility requirement and telemetry setting before installing.
