What Culvia is

Culvia is a local-first workbench for photographers sorting, scoring, reviewing, and preparing photos for delivery. It imports photo folders or temporary uploads, scans subfolders, removes repeated paths, and creates thumbnails for gallery browsing. Local models can score images for aesthetic and technical qualities. Optional OpenAI-compatible vision review adds critique, subscores, and retouching or shooting advice, but sends photos to an external service only when enabled. Photographers make the final call with pick, hold, or reject decisions, star ratings, and color labels, then filter and sort across review dimensions. Culvia exports selected photos and CSV results; documented fields map to Lightroom ratings, flags, and color labels, and Capture One ratings and color tags. Photos and working data stay on the user's machine by default. Desktop packages are available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with a local web app through its Python package. Culvia is free and open source, but early-stage and not a substitute for a full RAW editor. Current desktop binaries are not Developer ID signed, notarized, or Windows code signed.

Good

  • Local models score aesthetic and technical qualities.
  • Manual picks, holds, and rejects remain authoritative.
  • Exports selected photos and CSV results.
  • Photos stay local unless vision review is enabled.
  • Available on macOS, Windows, Linux, and web.

Watch out

  • The project describes itself as early-stage.
  • It is not a full RAW editor replacement.
  • Desktop binaries may trigger operating-system warnings.
  • XMP, sessions, catalogs, and sidecar writing is future work.

Who it suits

Culvia suits photographers reviewing groups of similar frames from events, portraits, shoots, or personal archives. It is for culling and review workflows rather than full RAW editing.

Verdict

Culvia brings local scoring, optional AI critique, manual selection, and export into a photo-review workflow. Its local-first approach and CSV mappings are useful, but its early maturity and lack of RAW editing are important boundaries.
