What Buildroot is
Buildroot is a free, open-source tool for building complete Linux systems for embedded devices through cross-compilation. A build can produce a cross-compilation toolchain, root filesystem, Linux kernel image and bootloader. It supports processors including ARM, MIPS, PowerPC and RISC-V, and provides default configurations for hundreds of boards. Build settings can be managed through menuconfig, nconfig, xconfig or gconfig. The project supports several thousand packages, including X.org, Gtk3, Qt 5, GStreamer, Webkit and Kodi. Buildroot is designed to run on Linux systems; its manual also describes a Vagrant setup for Linux or Mac OS X and gives Windows instructions. The manual is licensed under GNU General Public License version 2. Releases are made every three months, and the 2025.02 LTS series is listed with support through March 2028, including vulnerability tracking and prioritized fixes. Buildroot is aimed mainly at people working with embedded systems. One important limit is that it does not generate binary packages such as .deb or .ipkg files.

Who it suits
Buildroot is aimed mainly at people working with embedded systems who need to assemble Linux images for target hardware. It is designed to run on Linux systems.
Verdict
Buildroot provides a configurable route to complete embedded Linux systems, with support for many processors, boards and packages. Its lack of binary package generation is worth noting when choosing a build workflow.
