Binderus
Binderus is a local-first note-taking app for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
What Binderus is
Binderus is a local-first note-taking app for Linux, macOS, and Windows. It edits plain Markdown files in a WYSIWYG editor with slash commands, tables, code blocks, LaTeX math, and Mermaid diagrams. You can organize notes in multiple vaults and use instant search, plugins, themes, wikilinks, and backlinks. Notes can remain ordinary Markdown files or be stored in an optional encrypted local database. That database uses AES-256 and derives its key from a passphrase with Argon2id; Binderus says a lost passphrase cannot be recovered. Images and attachments stay unencrypted on disk unless attachment encryption is enabled. The app has no proprietary sync server, but its documentation describes syncing vaults through services and tools such as iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, Syncthing, or Git. Vaults must be in the operating system’s Documents directory for Binderus to access them. It works offline, is open source, and includes PDF, DOCX, and HTML export. The full desktop app is free forever, with no account required.

Verdict
Binderus combines Markdown editing and organization with local storage and optional encryption. Its free plan and portable files suit people who prefer control over where notes are kept, though the Documents-folder requirement and attachment caveat matter.
