AWS AppConfig
AWS AppConfig lets teams change application behavior in production using feature flags and dynamic configuration, without redeploying code.
What AWS AppConfig is
AWS AppConfig lets teams change application behavior in production using feature flags and dynamic configuration, without redeploying code. Teams can turn on features immediately or release them gradually to selected groups, including fine-grained and high-cardinality segments. It also supports A/B and multivariate tests on live traffic, including tests of feature flags, configurations and user experiences. LLM model settings, parameters and prompts can be managed as dynamic configuration and tested in variants. Configuration data can come from AppConfig’s hosted store, AWS Secrets Manager, Systems Manager Parameter Store or Amazon S3. Deployments can be started through the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI or an SDK, and the service can be used with workloads on EC2, AWS Lambda containers, mobile applications or edge devices. Monitored alarms can trigger rollback when thresholds are breached; named services include Amazon CloudWatch, Datadog and Dynatrace. AWS-authored extensions can send deployment events to EventBridge, SNS or SQS and create or update Atlassian Jira issues when feature flags change. PrivateLink enables private VPC access, and customer-managed AWS KMS keys add encryption for hosted and deployed data. The hosted configuration store has a 2 MB default size limit and a 4 MB maximum. Pricing is usage-based, with charges per configuration request, configuration received and experiment hour.

- Usage-based charges include requests, configuration receipt and experiment hours.
Who it suits
It suits teams that need to adjust application behavior or test configuration changes while software is running in production. It can be used with workloads on AWS compute, mobile applications and edge devices.
Verdict
AWS AppConfig combines runtime configuration, staged releases and live experiments, with rollback options tied to monitored alarms. Teams should account for its hosted configuration size limits and usage-based billing.
