The foldable mobile phone market is still relatively new and limited in terms of brands. Currently, Samsung holds a significant share of the global market and has the most number of foldable devices to offer as well. At the start, Huawei was also a strong player in the foldable market, but after the U.S. ban, the company could not maintain its position. Other Chinese brands did not step up to fill the gap left by Huawei, leaving Samsung with a virtual monopoly. However, Xiaomi has now entered the market with its Xiaomi MIX Fold and MIX Fold 2 devices. The company is now reportedly working on the third generation of its foldable phone, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 3.
The latest news on the Xiaomi MIX Fold 3 suggests that the device will feature a periscope telephoto sensor, a departure from the 8MP 2x telephoto camera in the MIX Fold 2. This move is believed to be aimed at addressing the previous model’s camera shortcomings and providing an improved optical zoom effect. And how better to do that than by using a periscopic camera lens.
The concept of the periscope telephoto lens is inspired by a periscope, though the light transmission line has been altered. This modification allows for a difference in the level of the lens compared to the main camera sensor. The advantage of periscope telephoto lenses in comparison to traditional telephoto lenses is their ability to capture distant images more effectively. For instance, the Mi MIX Fold 3’s 8-megapixel periscope telephoto lens provides 5x optical zoom and 50x hybrid zoom, offering a more impressive zoom effect compared to the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2.
It is believed that the upcoming Xiaomi MIX Fold 3, with its periscope telephoto lens, will offer an improvement in image quality. The device will maintain the sleek and lightweight design of its predecessor, but will also feature an under-screen camera technology. This means that the device will have a full-screen display, without the presence of a notch or a punch-hole design, resulting in an uninterrupted viewing experience.
