Who owns AI-generated audio? Usually, the answer depends on two separate questions: what your plan lets you use, and what copyright law protects. A paid plan may grant commercial permission while the underlying, entirely AI-generated passages still lack copyright protection in the United States. Your strongest ownership position comes from identifiable human work, such as original lyrics, a recorded performance, arrangement, editing or other creative changes.
What “Ownership” Means For An AI Track
Platform ownership language is a contract promise; copyright is a legal right. The U.S. Copyright Office says material generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, prompts alone do not make you the author, and only human-authored parts of a mixed work can be protected. If you register a work containing more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material, you must disclose it and describe your contribution. U.S. Copyright Office AI report

- Permission to use: Your subscription or download license may allow commercial publishing.
- Copyright protection: Protection can attach to your lyrics, melody, performance, arrangement and edits when they reflect your human authorship.
- Third-party rights: A recognizable voice, borrowed recording or uploaded reference can create consent and clearance issues even when the platform grants a commercial license.
Which Platforms State Commercial Permission
The table separates a vendor’s stated usage permission from copyright ownership. “Not stated” means the supplied product information does not establish a comparable term.
| Platform | What Its Supplied Terms Say | Free-Plan Position | Ownership Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suno | Songs created as a paid subscriber are yours to keep and use, including video backgrounds and album publication; the Pro plan states full commercial rights. | Free Plan does not include commercial rights. | Commercial permission does not make entirely AI-generated passages copyrightable. |
| Eleven Music | Tracks are described as cleared for broad commercial use, while commercial rights vary by subscription tier. | Free plan is limited to personal use. | Check the tier and Terms, especially for film, television and studio games, which are excluded in the supplied limitation. |
| Loudly | Loudly describes its music as royalty-free with a commercial license included. | Free generated tracks are limited to 30 seconds. | Paid licensing rights depend on the plan terms. |
| Mureka | Downloaded tracks can carry full commercial rights across platforms and projects, and are described as royalty-free. | Not stated. | Confirm the rights attached to the plan used for the download. |
| Musicful | Downloads come with a non-exclusive, perpetual license; Musicful retains ownership and offers a commercial licence certificate. | Free/Basic is non-commercial. | You receive usage permission rather than exclusive ownership. |
| Songin.ai | Paid-plan music is stated to have full commercial rights for YouTube, Spotify, ads and games. | Free downloads are watermarked MP3 files for personal use only. | Commercial rights begin with a paid plan under the supplied terms. |
| Tunee | Tunee says generated songs and videos carry a full commercial license and that users keep 100% of the rights. | Free users may use music for personal projects with attribution. | Tunee also says AI copyright law is evolving and gives no absolute copyright guarantee. |
| OpenMusic AI | Tracks are described as royalty-free, cleared for commercial use on platforms including YouTube, Spotify and TikTok, with a license for proof. | Not stated. | Plan terms still govern downloads and commercial licensing. |
How To Build A Stronger Ownership Record
- Start with material you wrote or recorded. Use your own lyrics, a melody you composed, or a performance you have permission to use. For an ownership-focused prompt, specify: “Use my original lyrics exactly, keep my recorded vocal as the reference, and generate a new instrumental arrangement.”
- Choose a plan that grants the intended use before generating. Free-plan restrictions differ sharply: Suno’s Free Plan is non-commercial, Musicful Free/Basic is non-commercial, Songin.ai’s free downloads are personal-use only, and Tunee’s free use requires attribution.
- Preserve evidence of your contribution. Save dated lyrics, recordings, prompts, exported stems, edits and the invoice or plan page that applied when you downloaded the track.
- Edit the result yourself. Rework structure, timing, instrumentation or vocals where you can show a human creative decision. A prompt by itself is not enough for U.S. copyright authorship.
- Read the current license before publishing. Check whether the selected tier covers your destination, whether downloads retain the license after cancellation, and whether the vendor limits films, television, games, advertising or other uses. The supplied entries do not establish those details for every platform.
Voices, Covers And Uploaded Audio Need Consent
Do not treat a commercial-use label as permission to imitate a real singer or upload someone else’s recording. Get consent from the voice owner and follow the platform’s voice-cloning, reference-audio and cover terms. This matters even when your own lyrics and arrangement are original.

Keep the platform license and your authorship record together when you upload. YouTube requires disclosure for realistic altered or synthetic content that could be mistaken for a real person’s performance. Its inauthentic-content policy targets mass-produced, repetitive or template-based uploads rather than AI use by itself. YouTube policy clarification

For a release, describe the human contribution accurately, retain any required attribution, and use the vendor’s current license wording. If a product, plan, territory or use case is not covered above, check the vendor’s site before you publish.

What To Claim About Your Track
- Say which platform and plan granted your permission to publish.
- Identify your human contributions: lyrics, melody, performance, arrangement or edits.
- Disclose AI involvement where a registration form or publishing service requires it.
- Avoid claiming exclusive copyright in passages generated entirely by AI unless a qualified professional confirms a different rule applies in your jurisdiction.
