Overview

Rather than separating formats into different apps, Story Architect brings writing and story-development tools together in a shared project bible. Free users can create unlimited projects and documents within each project, and offline mode supports work without an internet connection. That makes it a practical starting point for writers with multiple works in progress, though projects do not automatically sync between desktop and mobile: transfers require moving project files manually.

Key features

The Free plan includes basic writing, character, location and world tools. Pro adds mind maps, an image gallery, presentations, a corkboard, a timeline, character relationship tools, location and world maps, and extended statistics. These options help writers organize plot and setting before or during drafting, but the more developed planning toolkit sits behind a subscription.

The AI assistant can paraphrase, summarize, expand or shorten passages, translate, insert text between paragraphs, and generate text from a prompt. Every use consumes credits, so it is better treated as occasional assistance than an unlimited drafting partner. Pro includes 5 credits per month, or 60 per year and 120 over a lifetime; Creator includes 10 per month, or 120 per year. Separate credit packs never expire, which suits intermittent use, but add cost beyond the subscription.

Creator adds real-time collaboration, 5 GB of cloud storage, screenplay breakdown and showrunner tools. Subscribers can grant project access to co-authors on any tier, though what those co-authors can edit depends on their own plan. Revision tracking is also supported. STARC imports KIT Scenarist, Final Draft, Celtx and Trelby files, as well as TXT, ODT, DOCX and Fountain; exports include DOCX, PDF, FDX and Fountain.

Story Architect is open core: its core source is available under the MIT license, while some features are closed source and commercially licensed. Users retain ownership of their work, and the user agreement permits the maker to use content only as needed to provide the service. Its privacy policy describes safeguards for online information and says personal information is not sold, distributed or leased without permission or a legal requirement.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free forever. It includes unlimited projects and documents per project, basic writing and worldbuilding tools, and no AI credits. It is a strong fit for writers who do not need the paid planning suite or AI assistance.

Pro costs 4.17 USD per month, billed annually, or $150 lifetime. It adds the planning features, image gallery and presentations, plus 5 AI credits monthly. Pro suits solo writers who want richer organization without collaboration. The lifetime option includes 120 AI credits; its stated price is $150, and the plan is billed lifetime.

Creator costs 8.34 USD per month, billed annually. It includes everything in Pro, real-time collaboration, 5 GB of cloud storage, screenplay breakdown and showrunner tools, and 10 AI credits monthly. It is the better fit for writers working with co-authors or production-oriented materials; solo writers may not need its collaboration and production extras.

Additional AI packs are $10.00 USD per month for 50 credits, $30.00 USD per month for 200, $60.00 USD per month for 500, or $100.00 USD per month for 1000; purchased credits never expire. A 30-day trial is also offered. For support, the pricing FAQ directs users to support@starc.app.

Platforms

Story Architect is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. Offline mode is supported, but desktop and mobile project synchronization is still in development, so writers moving between those devices must transfer project files manually. That limitation makes it less convenient for frequent cross-device switching than its broad platform support might suggest.

Who it's for

Story Architect is a good match for writers who want one workspace for several story forms, keep numerous projects in progress, or plan stories with visual and structural tools. Pro is aimed at professionals who want more planning depth; Creator is for people often on the move and teams needing real-time collaboration. It is a weaker fit for writers who expect seamless desktop-to-mobile syncing or substantial AI use without tracking credits.

Pros and cons

Pro: Unlimited free projects and documents make it easy to keep separate works and their supporting materials together.
Pro: Offline mode, broad desktop and mobile support, and imports from established script formats suit varied writing workflows.
Pro: Pro’s planning tools and Creator’s collaboration and production features serve different needs without requiring every user to buy the top tier.
Con: Desktop and mobile projects require manual transfer, disrupting writers who move between devices.
Con: AI assistance is credit-based, and even the paid subscriptions provide set monthly allowances.
Con: Co-authors’ editing abilities depend on their own plan, which can complicate collaboration across different tiers.

Alternatives

WriterDuet is worth considering if its free tier’s three-project limit is enough and you want a desktop app plus real-time collaboration on its Plus plan. Campfire offers a free starting point with limited access to writing and worldbuilding modules and requires no credit card. LivingWriter may suit a novelist who can work within one manuscript and 25,000 words on its free plan, with PDF export and three monthly AI requests.

Tolstoy Compose is another freemium writing option. Celtx is an alternative for writers who want to start with a free cloud-based studio limited to one project, with real-time collaboration. Dabble is for writers willing to pay $19.00 USD per month for its Writer plan and who want cloud backup and access across devices rather than Story Architect’s manual transfers.

Curvenote is a research-oriented alternative with a free plan for one private project and a Pro plan at $9.00 USD per month. Final Draft is a paid alternative with a free trial and a $99.99 USD per year annual suite plan.

Verdict

Choose Story Architect if you want generous project capacity, offline writing and planning tools for more than one story format, with the option to add collaboration as your needs grow. Look elsewhere if automatic desktop-mobile syncing is essential or you expect to use AI heavily: manual transfers and credit limits are the clearest compromises.
