Overview

Founded in 1965, the Munich-based company combines access to hundreds of thousands of production tracks with a process for finding and licensing music. Users can search with filters, ask consultants for curated suggestions, and manage license applications with price estimates and support. That is useful when choosing a track also means sorting out how a production may use it. Sonoton’s terms are directed to business users acting commercially or as self-employed professionals.

Sonoton says licenses include synchronization and usage rights for both the composition and recording from one source. License periods are in perpetuity unless the production changes. The company also says there are no extra fees for layouts, advertising cutdowns, DVD or Blu-ray copies, or language versions. Those terms can ease reuse across versions, but they do not remove the need to license the production’s actual use. Some commissioned broadcast productions are free when the broadcaster has a GEMA contract, with usage notification required; advertising, branded content, and certain secondary uses require a license.

Key features

Search and track matching

Filters help buyers narrow a very large production-music catalogue. Trackster offers another way to find a match: users can submit an MP3 or WAV file, or a YouTube, SoundCloud, or Vimeo URL, to locate similar tracks. That is particularly useful when a production already has a musical reference; buyers starting from a broader brief can instead ask consultants for curated suggestions.

Licensing and support

License applications, price estimates, and advice on selection, management, pricing, and licensing are part of the workflow. Support is offered by phone, email, and chat. Online payment is available, and many creations can be licensed for use immediately after payment, which can help keep a project moving. However, audio productions without voice-over, especially commercial releases, require Sonoton Music approval, so immediate payment should not be treated as universal clearance.

Sonoton says its music is part of the GEMA World Repertoire, while GEMA administers its own policies. Buyers should account for that distinction when checking the rights and obligations that apply to a particular use.

Pricing

Sonoton uses paid, use-specific licensing, with custom pricing for cases that do not fit the displayed options. The cheaper plans are narrow in scope; broader media, product, or territory needs can raise the cost. Prices below are per track and exclude 7% VAT where stated.

Radio & TV commissioned productions: Free when the commissioned broadcaster has a GEMA contract; usage notification is required. This is the best fit for qualifying commissioned broadcasts, not a general free-use license.
Corporate Media — Flat rate, 1 track 1 year 1 brand: 1.50 USD per year, billed per track, valid for 365 days, for all media and any number of productions under one brand. It suits repeat use for a single brand, but the one-year and one-brand limits matter.
Advertising — Flat rate — 1 City: 1.50 USD per year, billed per track and valid for 365 days, for all media and any number of productions for one product. The one-product scope makes it less flexible for campaigns spanning multiple products.
AV Productions — Non-fiction — G-S-A: 100.00 USD per once, per track and production, all media, for non-commercial visual media and streaming.
Advertising — Internet/Cinema/Radio — 1 City: 100.00 USD per once, per track and production, for one city and one usage type under the worldwide price list.
Corporate Media — 1 Medium: 100.00 USD per once, per track and production, worldwide, for branded content in one medium.
Corporate Media — All media: 150.00 USD per once, per track and production, worldwide, for branded content across all media. It costs more than the one-medium option but avoids that medium restriction.
Audio — Podcast: 200.00 USD per once, per track and production, worldwide, for audio productions.
Advertising — TV — 1 City: 200.00 USD per once, per track and production, for one city under the worldwide price list.
Advertising — All media — 1 City: 300.00 USD per once, per track and production, for one city. It is the broader-media advertising option among these plans, at a higher one-time price.

Who it's for

Sonoton is a strong fit for production companies, agencies, and self-employed commercial users who value a large searchable catalogue, consultant recommendations, and help navigating licenses. Its usage-based options can accommodate different production types, from podcasts to branded content and advertising. It is a weaker fit for hobbyists or buyers seeking unrestricted free commercial music, and for teams that need a flat monthly subscription with a simple, uniform price.

Pros and cons

Pro: A catalogue of hundreds of thousands of tracks and Trackster’s audio and URL matching offer useful routes to finding music, whether starting from a search or an existing reference.
Pro: Composition and recording rights can come from one source, with perpetual terms unless the production changes and no extra fees for several common production versions.
Pro: Consultant suggestions and phone, email, and chat support can help with selection and licensing decisions.
Con: Pricing and permitted use depend on the production, and many options are priced per track and production rather than through a simple subscription.
Con: Low-cost flat-rate options are bounded by a year, one brand, or one product, while broader commercial uses cost more.
Con: Audio productions without voice-over require approval, which can add a clearance step for commercial releases.
