Overview

The package pairs smartctl, for direct device queries and tests, with smartd, which monitors devices periodically. Together they can surface warning signs of degradation and failure, but SMART monitoring is a warning capability, not a guarantee that a disk will announce every failure in advance.

A failing SMART health status can indicate that a device has failed or predicts failure within 24 hours. That makes a reported failure urgent; it is not a substitute for keeping backups or a promise of advance notice in every case.

Key features

Inspection and self-tests

smartctl can report health status, capabilities, error logging, offline surface scanning, and estimated self-test duration. It also displays vendor-specific SMART attributes in both raw and normalized form, a useful level of detail for users who need to interpret device readings rather than rely on a single pass-or-fail indicator.

It can start short, long, and other device self-tests and read their results from the self-test log. This gives technically confident users a way to initiate checks and review outcomes directly, though the feature set is oriented around device data rather than a simplified diagnostic workflow.

Recurring monitoring

smartd periodically checks SMART status and can monitor error and self-test logs, attribute changes, sectors, and temperature. Configuration can schedule self-tests; warnings can go to email addresses or executable commands, while errors and attribute changes can also be reported to syslog. These options make it adaptable to managed systems, but require the user to configure and maintain monitoring rather than expect an out-of-the-box notification experience.

Pricing

Smartmontools — 0.00 USD per free. The free plan includes both smartctl and smartd under the GNU GPL Version 2 license. There are no paid tiers or plan quotas in the supplied plan terms, so cost is not the trade-off; the practical one is whether command-line inspection and daemon configuration suit your needs.

Platforms

Supported systems include Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, Windows, Cygwin, OS/2, eComStation, and QNX. It can also run from various Live CDs and DVDs. Device support spans ATA/SATA, SCSI/SAS, and NVMe disks, as well as SCSI/SAS tape devices, giving it reach across more than standard desktop drives.

Who it's for

Choose smartmontools if you want free, detailed SMART inspection and configurable recurring monitoring across supported systems and storage types. It is especially suited to users comfortable reading attributes and logs or setting up a daemon. If you want a guided graphical tool that hides those details, this package is less likely to be the right fit.

Pros and cons

Broad device coverage: Support for ATA/SATA, SCSI/SAS, NVMe, and SCSI/SAS tape suits mixed storage environments.
Deep diagnostics: Attribute values, logs, capability reporting, and multiple self-test types support more than a basic health-status check.
Configurable alerts: Email, executable warning commands, and syslog reporting let users direct warnings into existing workflows.
Configuration overhead: Recurring monitoring and scheduled tests depend on smartd and its configuration, which is less convenient for users seeking a ready-made desktop experience.
SMART has limits: A failing status can signal imminent failure, but monitoring cannot ensure that every device problem will be predicted.

Alternatives

For a paid option with a free trial and Linux and Windows platform support, consider Hard Disk Sentinel. If a free choice across Linux, macOS, and Windows is your priority, DiskMaster is another option. nvm is also listed as a free option, though its supplied description identifies it as a Node.js version manager rather than a disk diagnostic tool.

Verdict

smartmontools is the right choice for technically confident users who want no-cost SMART inspection and configurable monitoring across a wide range of storage devices. Its detail and flexibility are the draw; the command-line utilities and configuration burden are the reasons to look elsewhere if you want diagnostics presented through a more guided interface.
