Overview

SillyTavern is a configurable interface for bringing character chats, language models, and creative tools into one workspace. It is a strong fit for technically comfortable AI hobbyists who want control over prompts and backends, but not for people seeking a hosted chatbot that works without setup.

Its appeal is breadth: users can build conversations around character cards and connect local or cloud models, while the project itself does not supply an online service. That keeps the interface free and open-source, but means setup and privacy decisions depend partly on the services and models a user chooses.

Key features

Character chats and prompt control

Users can create or import character cards, switch among them, and revisit saved chat histories. Group chats, user personas, and lorebooks add ways to shape participants and conversational context. Prompt controls, chat commands, scripting, and built-in retrieval-augmented generation give power users more influence over responses; the trade-off is a more involved workspace than a simple chat app.

Model and media integrations

SillyTavern works with local and cloud language-model backends, including KoboldCpp, llama.cpp, Ollama, OpenAI, Claude, Mistral, OpenRouter, and AI Horde. Its extension ecosystem adds capabilities such as character sprites, chat summarization and translation, web search, image generation, and text-to-speech. Image-generation extensions include Stable Diffusion, FLUX, and DALL-E. This range is useful for users who want to assemble a tailored creative setup, but the choice of provider and any associated service requirements remain theirs.

Privacy and practical limits

The project says it offers no hosted services and does not programmatically track user data. API keys are kept in a secrets.json file in the user data directory and hidden in the interface by default after saving and refreshing. Those protections do not prevent a cloud model provider from logging data sent to its service, so users handling sensitive conversations should consider local backends.

Running SillyTavern requires NodeJS 20 or higher. For local inference, its documentation recommends an NVIDIA 3000-series GPU with at least 6GB of VRAM. It also warns that performance can noticeably degrade above 1,000 characters, making it a less suitable choice for users who plan to maintain very large character libraries.

Pricing

SillyTavern is free and open-source under the AGPL-3.0 license, and the project says it will remain free. The SillyTavern plan costs 0.00 USD per free; there is no free trial because the software is already free. There are no paid tiers to unlock, but users need to arrange any model backends they want to use, including cloud providers where applicable.

Platforms

SillyTavern is available for Android, Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and self-hosted use. It has no native mobile apps, so Android availability should not be mistaken for a dedicated native app. Its NodeJS requirement also makes technical setup part of the platform experience.

Who it's for

Choose SillyTavern if you want to manage character-based conversations, tune prompts, and connect a mix of local and cloud models or media extensions. It is particularly suited to AI hobbyists and power users willing to configure their own environment. If you want a ready-made service with less setup, or expect to maintain more than 1,000 characters, its technical demands and library-performance limit are meaningful drawbacks.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open-source, with no hosted service from the project and no programmatic user-data tracking.
Pros: A broad mix of character tools, prompt controls, local and cloud model connections, and media extensions supports highly customized workflows.
Pros: Saved chat histories let users resume or review conversations across character cards.
Cons: NodeJS 20 or higher is required, and local inference may call for substantial GPU capability.
Cons: Cloud providers may log information sent to them, so using SillyTavern does not by itself make a conversation private.
Cons: Performance can suffer with character libraries above 1,000 entries.
Cons: There are no native mobile apps, and the configurable setup is not aimed at users who want a turnkey chatbot.

Alternatives

Consider HammerAI if you want a free option with a stated allowance of 600 cloud messages per day, an 8,192-token context, two cloud LLMs, and support for local LLMs and an LLM API proxy. Its free-plan quota makes it more bounded than SillyTavern's free, open-source interface.

Talkie is another freemium alternative, with Android, iOS, and web platforms.

Choose Character.AI if its free plan's unlimited messaging, basic memory, and access to Character Voice better match your priorities than configuring SillyTavern's model connections.

Backyard AI offers a free plan with 300 messages per week, one included model, and 16k maximum memory; it may suit users who prefer a stated weekly allowance and included model.

Polybuzz is a freemium alternative with paid Basic and Premium plans.

Agnai is a freemium option available on web, Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Nastia offers a free plan with daily token limits, uncensored chat, and basic companion customization, making it a choice for users who prefer those included features to SillyTavern's configurable setup.

Serene Pub is a free alternative available on web, Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

Verdict

SillyTavern is best for technically confident users who want a free, customizable interface for character chats and a wide choice of model and media integrations. Its control and open-source model are the main reasons to choose it; the need to configure the environment, the privacy caveat around cloud providers, and its large-library performance limit are strong reasons to look elsewhere.
