Overview

Proton Mail combines end-to-end and zero-access encryption with practical inbox protections, including phishing and spam protection, password-protected emails and link confirmation. Tracker blocking helps prevent companies from monitoring email activity, and the inbox is ad-free. Proton says its apps are open source and independently audited, useful assurances for readers who value transparency alongside security.

Everyday tools include scheduling, undoing and snoozing messages, plus organizing mail with folders, labels and categories. Easy Switch imports email, calendars and contacts from Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, Apple and other providers, which can reduce the effort of changing services.

Key features

Encrypted email and calendar: End-to-end and zero-access encryption protect mail, and Proton also offers an encrypted calendar. This makes Proton a compelling choice when privacy is a priority rather than an optional extra.
Alias and domain support: Mail Plus includes 10 extra email addresses, 10 hide-my-email aliases and one custom email domain. Proton Unlimited expands that to 15 extra addresses, unlimited hide-my-email aliases and three custom domains.
External client access: Paid plans support IMAP and SMTP through Proton Mail Bridge. That gives subscribers a route to external email clients, but free users do not get this paid-plan capability.
Business and family options: Proton offers business email and custom domains, and says it secures more than 100,000 businesses. Proton Family supports up to five additional members and 3 TB of total storage.

Pricing

Proton Mail is freemium. Proton Free costs 0.00 USD per free, requires no credit card and provides 1 GB of storage and one encrypted email address. That is enough for a cautious start, but the modest storage cap is a real constraint for people keeping years of mail or large attachments. The free plan has the same security level as paid plans.

Mail Plus provides 15 GB of storage, 10 extra email addresses, one custom email domain, 10 hide-my-email aliases, unlimited folders and labels, and priority customer support. It suits an individual who wants a personal domain and a larger address and alias allowance without moving to the broader Unlimited tier.

Proton Unlimited raises storage to 500 GB, adds 15 extra email addresses and three custom domains, allows unlimited hide-my-email aliases, and includes dedicated customer support. It is the more fitting option for a household or a user who needs substantially more capacity and domain flexibility. The Family plan supports up to five additional members and 3 TB total storage.

Paid plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee. The desktop app has a 14-day free trial. The free tier is also described as starting at 500 MB in the FAQ, while the plan details give 1 GB, so readers should confirm the storage amount when signing up.

Platforms

Proton Mail is available on the web and on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. That broad coverage makes it practical for households and individuals using a mix of desktop and mobile devices.

Who it's for

Choose Proton Mail if encryption, tracker blocking and an ad-free inbox matter more to you than maximizing free storage. Mail Plus fits a personal domain and several separate addresses; Unlimited is better for heavier storage needs, multiple domains or dedicated support. Readers who want an inexpensive, plainly priced upgrade or a larger free mailbox may find Proton less suitable.

Pros and cons

Pro: End-to-end and zero-access encryption, tracker blocking and an encrypted calendar put privacy at the center of the service.
Pro: Apps span desktop and mobile platforms, and Easy Switch can bring over mail, calendars and contacts.
Pro: Paid tiers include custom domains and extra addresses, while Unlimited substantially expands storage and alias capacity.
Con: The free plan's 1 GB and single address are restrictive for users with large archives or separate work and personal identities.
Con: Mail Plus and Unlimited have custom pricing, making it harder to judge the cost of upgrading before choosing a plan.
Con: IMAP and SMTP access through Bridge is reserved for paid plans, limiting free users who rely on external email clients.

Alternatives

Zoho Mail is a better fit for a small group that prioritizes a free custom-domain setup: its free tier supports five users, one domain and 5 GB of mail storage per user.
Gmail suits readers who prefer Google’s broad platform reach and a free 15 GB shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos, rather than Proton’s privacy-centered approach.
eclipso Mail Europe is another freemium email option.
Outlook.com offers a free 15 GB mailbox with web, desktop and mobile access, making it a practical alternative for readers focused on mailbox capacity and broad access.
iCloud Mail is a fit for readers already using Apple devices, with mail storage shared across 5 GB of iCloud storage.
WEB.DE Mail offers a free tier with 1 GB email storage, up to 20 MB attachments, 4 GB online storage and two email addresses.
Yahoo Mail is an alternative with a 20 GB standard mailbox and inbox organization tools.
mail.ch offers a free plan with 1 GB storage, one alias, a 50-email daily limit and 60 MB attachments.

Verdict

Proton Mail is the right choice for people who want encrypted, tracker-blocking email on desktop and mobile, with paid paths to custom domains and more capacity. Its main drawback is the limited free mailbox and the lack of a clear paid price, so readers who need abundant free storage or want to compare upgrade costs upfront should look elsewhere.
