Overview

Podtrac is a web-based podcast analytics and promotion service for publishers who want download measurement alongside tools for audience growth and campaign attribution. Its strongest fit is a show or network ready to add a tracking redirect to episode URLs; the free plan makes basic measurement accessible, while broader promotion tools sit behind paid plans.

Key features

Podtrac reports daily episode downloads, source and country breakdowns, and unique monthly audience counts once a podcast reaches 1,000 unique downloads per month. Reports update from the previous day’s activity, typically by noon UTC, and the service says measurement is consistent across media hosts. It also says its data complies with IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines Version 2.0, a useful point for publishers who need a defined measurement standard.

Measurement requires adding a Podtrac redirect prefix to episode URLs, through a supported host or by editing the feed manually. That gives publishers a clear implementation route, but it is a real setup consideration rather than passive analytics. The service says it uses redundant cloud hosting, 24x7 monitoring, and guarantees 99.99% uptime.

A demographic survey adds audience data points to the dashboard. Smart Links provide show-specific landing pages with artwork, episode details, an integrated player, and links to major podcast apps such as Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Their reports break down clicks and downloads by episode, country, and download app, and distinguish new listeners from all listeners.

Promotion attribution covers dynamic ad insertion and baked-in promos, feed drops, and guest appearances. Any measured podcast can request promo trades free, but viewing and replying to incoming requests requires a paid account. Shows or networks at 500,000 or more monthly downloads are directed to request a demo for promotion tools, making Podtrac’s most ambitious use case less self-serve.

Pricing

Podtrac uses a freemium model. Getting Started costs 0.00 USD per free and provides basic Podtrac measurement, making it the sensible starting point for publishers who primarily need measurement reports. The free tier does not include the paid-account access needed to view and respond to promo-trade requests.

Grow Your Show has custom pricing and includes advanced functionality and report options, one Smart Link, and click and download performance reports. It suits a show that wants landing-page engagement reporting without the multiple-link and promotion focus of the next tier. Grow Your Show Plus also has custom pricing and adds multiple Smart Links plus podcast-to-podcast promotion and attribution, for publishers running several entry points or campaigns. Enterprise has custom pricing for large podcasts or networks. The plans’ custom pricing means buyers should weigh their specific Smart Link and promotion needs before choosing a tier.

Who it's for

Podtrac is a good fit for podcast publishers who want daily measurement, unique-listener counts, demographic survey data, or attribution for cross-podcast promotion. The free measurement tier also suits smaller shows willing to configure redirects. It is a weaker fit for publishers unwilling to change episode URLs, and large shows seeking self-serve promotion tools should account for the demo route at 500,000 monthly downloads or more.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free basic measurement offers daily downloads and source and country breakdowns, with unique monthly audience counts above the 1,000-download threshold.
Pros: Smart Link reporting joins click and download activity with episode, country, app, and listener-type breakdowns.
Pros: Promotion attribution spans several promo formats, while measured shows can request trades for free.
Cons: Measurement depends on adding a redirect prefix, which requires host support or manual feed editing.
Cons: Unique monthly audience reporting has a 1,000 unique downloads per month threshold.
Cons: Responding to inbound promo trades requires a paid account, and promotion tools for shows at 500,000 monthly downloads or above require a demo request.

Alternatives

Browse Podcast Analytics Software for more options. Magellan AI is worth considering if verified download counts and show visibility are the priority: its free prefix provides those, while full platform access requires a demo. Choose Listener if you want a paid web analytics product with a weekly-refresh Essential plan at 49.00 USD per month billed annually. Ausha is another paid web option. CoHost Prefix is a paid alternative. Podscribe is a paid API and web option. PodcastStats.com is another freemium web alternative. Podder is a paid API and web option with an Analytics plan at 19.00 USD per month for shows under 50k monthly downloads. Open Podcast is another paid alternative.

Verdict

Choose Podtrac if you want a free starting point for podcast measurement and may later need Smart Links or promotion attribution in the same service. Its strongest reason to look elsewhere is the redirect setup; its free measurement is also bounded by a 1,000-download audience threshold for unique monthly counts, while the expanded plans use custom pricing.
