Overview

Pencil is an AI advertising workspace for creating copy, images and video, with editing and campaign workflow tools built around the creative. It is most compelling for teams producing ads across multiple markets or channels; for a small, occasional need, the fixed monthly generation allowances may be more than necessary.

Key features

Briefing, generation, editing, approvals, publishing and evaluation sit within one workflow, which makes Pencil more than a generator for teams that need to manage creative through its next steps. It can create thousands of variations from a template and localise or translate them across markets. That scale is useful for campaign iteration, though the Core and Growth allowances put a hard ceiling on monthly generation, and unused generations do not carry forward.

The browser editor handles text, images, video and HTML, with exports including GIF, MP4, HTML5 and static formats. Brand kits and bulk generation support repeatable production. The integrations include Meta, TikTok Ads, LinkedIn Ads, Google Ads, YouTube, Display & Video 360 and Campaign Manager 360, alongside Monotype, Orange Logic, Bynder and GWI Consumer Research. Pencil says its security controls are SOC 2 Type II audited and customer data is not used to train its models. Pro adds data ring-fencing, AI governance, entity- and role-based access controls, and custom third-party tooling integrations.

Pricing

The free guided experience lets users create six ads, but it is not full platform access. Continued use of the full platform requires a paid plan.

Core: 11.00 USD per month, billed annually. Includes 50 generations per month, one workspace and chat support. It suits a solo user or small operation with predictable, modest output; the single workspace and capped quota limit its usefulness for larger teams.
Growth: 44.00 USD per month, billed annually. Raises the allowance to 250 generations per month and includes unlimited workspaces plus direct access to the product team and roadmap. It better fits a growing team coordinating work across projects, but still has a firm monthly cap with no rollover.
Pro: custom pricing. Includes unlimited generations, users, brands and markets, dedicated customer success and governance controls. It is the tier for enterprise-scale operation or stronger access and governance needs, but custom pricing means it is not a fixed-cost step up.

Core and Growth users cannot exceed their monthly generation allocation, so neither is suited to a workload that regularly spikes beyond its quota.

Platforms

Pencil runs on the web. Pencil Pro's help guidance says Google Chrome is the only browser that fully supports it, so teams choosing Pro should plan around Chrome rather than assume equivalent browser support.

Who it's for

Pencil is a strong fit for solo entrepreneurs and fast-growing teams that want generation, editing and campaign workflow in one browser-based product, and for enterprises needing broad user, brand and market capacity. Its template variation and localisation capabilities particularly suit teams adapting creative across audiences. It is less suitable for buyers who need uncapped output at a fixed price or only need a handful of ads from time to time.

Pros and cons

Pro: The workflow spans briefing through evaluation, reducing the need to treat ad generation as a disconnected step.
Pro: Template-based variation and localisation address multi-market production at scale.
Pro: Pro's unlimited generations, users, brands and markets, plus governance controls, target complex enterprise needs.
Con: The free experience stops at six guided ads, and ongoing full access is paid.
Con: Core and Growth impose non-rollover monthly generation caps, which can constrain uneven or fast-rising demand.
Con: Pro has custom pricing, and full browser support is limited to Chrome.

Alternatives

AdCreate is worth considering if a free plan matters: it offers limited monthly credits, two AI models, 10-second maximum video, 720p exports and five stock avatars. Quickads is a better candidate for buyers who want a free starting point with an ad research library, one saved brand kit, AI image and video ads, and basic analytics; its Pro plans start from $99/mo.

Pomelli is the free alternative, with several hundred image and video generations. AdMaker.ai offers a free option with 50 credits per month (about two videos), but exports are watermarked, limited to 9:16, and credits expire every two months.

AdCreative.ai may suit buyers comparing a paid ad-creative tool with a yearly-billed Starter plan at 20.00 USD per month. Adobe GenStudio for Performance Marketing and Bannerflow are paid web alternatives. Flair.ai has a free plan with one custom model, five generated images and one video generation.

Verdict

Choose Pencil if your team needs to generate, adapt and move advertising creative through a connected workflow, especially across brands, markets and channels. Its scale and Pro governance are the strongest reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if you need generous output on a fixed budget, a lasting free tier, or full support in a browser other than Chrome.
