Overview

OpenFamily combines 12 built-in modules that synchronize across devices in real time, spanning shopping, tasks, calendars, budgets and recipes. That breadth makes it a plausible central hub for a household rather than another single-purpose calendar. The choice is between keeping the system on infrastructure you manage or paying for OpenFamily Cloud.

The AGPL-3.0 license and self-hosting option are meaningful for families who want control over their deployment. Cloud subscribers instead get data hosted in France, with no ads or tracking, alongside automatic updates and backups.

Key features

Shopping lists support automatic categories, prices, quantities and reusable templates. Ticking items in real time while shopping is useful for households splitting a trip; price and quantity fields also make the list more informative than a basic checklist.

The calendar supports recurring and all-day appointments, as many as five reminders per appointment, and connections to Google, Outlook and iCloud calendars. It also imports .ics files, which helps bring existing schedules into the family view. Push alerts cover appointments and tasks, and can arrive in each member's language even when the app is closed.

Meal planning connects a weekly view to recipes, imports meal plans from Tandoor and exports the week's plan as a PDF. Family profiles hold health information, allergies, vaccines and emergency contacts for each member, extending the app beyond routine scheduling into practical household reference.

Integrations with Mealie, Tandoor, Home Assistant, Grocy and Nextcloud broaden its usefulness for households already using those services. This is a particularly good fit for users who want family planning connected to a wider self-hosted setup.

Pricing

Self-hosted: 0.00 EUR per free. Self-hosting stays free forever, and the data remains with the household. Docker is required except when using the Windows installer, which bundles Node.js and PostgreSQL. This plan best suits people willing to handle installation and operation themselves; the zero price comes with that responsibility.

OpenFamily Cloud: 3.90 EUR per month. The subscription is for the whole family, not an individual seat, and includes automatic updates and backups, data hosted in France, and the option to export and switch to self-hosting. It is the more practical choice for households that want the app without managing a server, though it adds an ongoing cost where self-hosting does not.

Platforms

OpenFamily supports Android, iOS, web, Windows, API access and self-hosted deployment. Windows has an all-in-one installer, while Android is distributed as an APK. Self-hosting uses Docker Compose to launch PostgreSQL, an Express server and an Nginx frontend, making the app available on a local network or production domain. That flexibility will appeal to technically confident households; the Docker requirement makes the free route less straightforward for others.

Who it's for

OpenFamily is best for families that want one place for shared tasks, shopping, calendars, meal planning and household records, and that value either deployment control or a family-wide hosted subscription. It is less compelling for someone seeking a no-setup, no-cost hosted option: the free plan is self-hosted, while the hosted plan costs 3.90 €/month per family.

Pros and cons

Pro: Twelve real-time modules bring multiple household routines together, reducing the need to split planning across separate tools.
Pro: The calendar's five-reminder allowance, external calendar connections and .ics import help accommodate busy schedules and existing calendars.
Pro: Free self-hosting, the AGPL-3.0 license and export from Cloud give control-conscious users a path to keep or move their data.
Pro: One Cloud subscription covers the whole household and includes updates, backups and France-hosted data without ads or tracking.
Con: The free option requires self-hosting, with Docker required except on Windows; that setup burden rules it out for families who do not want to manage deployment.
Con: Avoiding that burden means paying 3.90 €/month per family, a recurring cost for households that would rather use a free hosted service.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse Family Calendar Apps. Famnest is worth considering for its free shared to-dos, calendar, chores, routines and basic meal planning across Android, iOS, macOS and web. Ahenora has a free plan after a 14-day period, with two adults, tasks, a calendar, shared lists, chat and reminders. Fami offers a free core set that includes a shared calendar, chores, shopping list, budget and family places.

Equal House is an alternative for households whose needs fit its free plan's three-day-ahead planning horizon. Famnly is an iOS-only alternative with a free plan for one managed member. Cozi offers a free shared calendar, automatic notifications, grocery and to-do lists, and a recipe library on Android and iOS. FamCal is another option, with a free plan across Android, iOS, macOS and web. FamilyDash may suit a household that can work within one connected calendar and one reminder per event on its free plan.

Verdict

Choose OpenFamily if your family wants a broad shared organizer and values the choice between free self-hosting and a household-wide cloud plan with updates and backups. Its strongest case is the combination of real-time modules, useful calendar and shopping tools, and deployment flexibility. Look elsewhere if you need a free hosted option or do not want to manage the setup required for self-hosting.
