Overview

Open Social brings community management together with a six-product suite: Community Management System, Cloud Platform, Gaia AI, Engagement Studio, Connection Hub and Lumina Insights. Its support for multi-layered organizational arrangements is useful when a community spans teams or organizations, but that breadth may be more than a small group needs.

The Community Management System supports custom roles, permissions and organizational structures, helping administrators tailor access to complex communities. Private groups are supported. The core software is available free through the Drupal community for use in your own projects, while the SaaS subscription includes hosting, additional products and professional services.

Key features

Workflows and integrations

Gaia AI assists with workflows, content moderation and advanced search. Connection Hub supports connections to systems such as Salesforce and Snowflake, as well as GraphQL, webhooks, Kafka and no-code Zapier connections. This range is valuable when community activity needs to connect with an organization's existing systems; it is less compelling for groups that only need a standalone discussion space.

Document and mobile collaboration

The optional Document Collaboration Suite supports real-time co-editing of documents, spreadsheets, presentations and drawings, including docx, xlsx, pptx, odf and visio formats. That makes it a practical addition for groups producing shared work, but it is an add-on rather than a stated part of the free core. A branded native iOS and Android app is also available as an add-on, with push notifications.

Security and hosting

Open Social says it is ISO 27001 certified; its Cloud Platform page also cites GDPR standards and isolated single-tenant hosting. For EU/EEA deployments, primary storage and routine customer-data processing remain in the EEA, with limited safeguarded cross-border transfers for essential functions. An on-premise hosting option addresses organizations with policy or in-house infrastructure requirements. SaaS customers can receive professional support and enterprise services, including maintenance, security audits, performance optimization and developer training.

Pricing

The Community Management System open-source core costs 0.00 USD per free and can be implemented in your own projects. It is the clear fit for organizations willing to manage their own implementation and hosting; it does not include the SaaS subscription's hosting, additional products and professional services.

The SaaS subscription is paid, with custom pricing. It fits organizations seeking a hosted platform and access to additional products and professional services, but readers who need a published price to compare costs may prefer another option. The branded mobile app and Document Collaboration Suite are add-ons, so organizations should account for those separately when considering the broader setup.

Platforms

Open Social supports Android, iOS, web, API and self-hosted use. Native mobile apps are available, while the cloud and on-premise hosting choices give organizations options for deployment.

Who it's for

Open Social is best suited to organizations managing layered communities across teams or partners, especially when they need custom access structures, integrations or collaborative document work. Its free core can suit teams able to implement a Drupal-based project themselves. It is a weaker fit for a small community seeking a simple service with transparent subscription pricing.

Pros and cons

Pros: Custom roles and permission structures suit complex organizations; integrations span established enterprise systems and developer interfaces; optional real-time document co-editing supports shared production.
Cons: The broader SaaS plan has custom pricing, making cost comparison difficult; mobile apps and document collaboration are add-ons; the free core requires organizations to implement their own project.

Verdict

Choose Open Social if your organization needs a structured community platform that can connect to business systems and support collaboration across groups, and you can either implement the free core or justify custom-priced SaaS. Look elsewhere if straightforward published pricing or a ready-to-use free hosted plan matters more than organizational depth.
