Overview

Onshape is a browser-accessible 3D CAD tool for designing parts and assemblies with parametric modeling. It is best suited to product-design teams that need shared editing and design-data control across web and mobile. The free tier is useful for public, non-commercial work; private or commercial projects require a paid plan.

Its combination of modeling, collaboration, and built-in PDM makes Onshape a coherent workspace rather than just a place to create geometry. That breadth comes with a clear constraint: free documents are public, and the commercial plans carry a substantial annual cost.

It belongs among 3D CAD Software, CAD software, and 3D modeling software.

Key features

Modeling and production

Parametric tools cover solids, surfaces, and sheet metal, with dedicated sheet-metal tools and assembly design. That makes Onshape relevant for product work spanning individual components and assembled designs. A built-in render engine supports visualization, and STL and OBJ mesh support plus 3D-print export cover common routes to fabrication.

Simulation supports linear static and modal analysis for stress, deformation, and natural frequencies. CAM covers machining from 2.5-axis through 5-axis machines. These capabilities extend Onshape beyond modeling, although the plan tier matters: simulation is included in Professional, while Standard is positioned around commercial CAD and built-in data management.

Collaboration and data control

Multi-user editing, instant sharing, real-time communication, and access controls support teams working on the same design. Branching and merging, infinite undo, edit history, version control, search, and release management help keep design changes traceable. Updates arrive every three weeks without installations or downtime, a practical advantage for teams that want ongoing changes without managing desktop software updates.

Integrations include Slack, Arena PLM, Altium Designer, FeatureScript, REST API, and the App Store. Enterprise adds advanced administration, SSO, role-based access, guest users, and IP audit trails; Onshape Government is built on AWS GovCloud and helps meet ITAR and EAR requirements. Professional and Enterprise customers retain company ownership of design data when users are removed, an important safeguard for organizations managing staff changes.

Support

Support options include direct in-product help, priority and technical support, courses, and guided onboarding. Qualified professionals can try Professional for up to six months through the Discovery Program without a credit card.

Pricing

The Free Plan costs 0.00 USD per free. It offers unlimited public storage, but it is restricted to non-commercial use and every document is publicly accessible. That is a workable option for learning or open projects, not for confidential designs or paid work.

The Standard Plan costs 1500.00 USD per year, billed annually. It adds professional CAD for commercial use, built-in data management, and unlimited private storage. It fits commercial users who need private designs but do not require the additional capabilities bundled into Professional.

The Professional Plan costs 2500.00 USD per year, billed annually. It includes company-managed data, release management, advanced PDM, and simulation. The higher price is easier to justify for organizations that need those controls and analysis tools; qualified professionals may first use the up-to-six-month free trial.

Enterprise has custom pricing for large companies. It adds custom release management, analytics and dashboards, an Arena PLM connection, advanced administration and security, and priority support. It is aimed at organizations with broader governance and support needs rather than individual designers or small teams.

Platforms

Onshape runs in a browser and has apps for iOS and Android. That reach suits teams that need to access designs across devices, though the stated browser access and mobile apps are the platform options.

Who it's for

Onshape is a strong fit for product-design teams that value concurrent collaboration, version and release controls, and access from a browser or mobile device. It also suits non-commercial users willing to keep all work public. It is a poor fit for anyone who needs private commercial work on a free plan, or who wants to avoid a substantial annual software commitment.

Pros and cons

Pro: Shared editing, real-time communication, and access controls keep collaboration close to the design itself.
Pro: Built-in PDM, including history, version control, search, and release management, helps teams manage design changes without separating that work from CAD.
Pro: Parametric modeling, assemblies, rendering, simulation, and CAM support a broad product-design workflow.
Pro: Browser access and iOS and Android apps provide multiple ways to reach the workspace.
Con: Free documents are public and limited to non-commercial use, ruling out confidential or paid projects.
Con: Standard starts at 1500.00 USD per year and Professional at 2500.00 USD per year, a high commitment for individuals or small teams.
Con: Key capabilities such as simulation and advanced PDM are tied to Professional, so the entry commercial plan may not cover every team's workflow.

Alternatives

Shapr3D is worth considering if you want a free option limited to two projects or a Pro plan priced at 299.00 USD per year; its listed platforms are macOS and Windows rather than Onshape's web and mobile reach.

OwlCAD is a freemium alternative for users who want free forever access with commercial rights, broad file import and export, and support across Linux, macOS, web, and Windows.

Rhino 3D is another CAD alternative with Windows and macOS support, a free trial, and a permanent-license option.

FreeCAD is a free alternative for users who prefer software available on Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Creo is an alternative for organizations considering a floating license with support and maintenance included; it supports web, desktop, and mobile platforms.

Autodesk Fusion is a freemium alternative with an annually billed plan at 57.00 USD per month that combines CAD/CAM, team collaboration, PCB design, and electromechanical integration.

Solid Edge is a freemium alternative available on web and Windows.

Zoo Design Studio is a freemium alternative available on Linux, macOS, web, and Windows.

Verdict

Choose Onshape if your team needs browser-based CAD that combines parametric design with shared editing and built-in design-data management. Its strongest case is keeping collaboration and change control in the same workflow; its clearest drawback is the cost of private commercial use. If public documents are unacceptable and the annual plans exceed your budget, look elsewhere.
