Overview

Octo brings together feeds, discussions, polls, surveys, events, payments and badges, with private spaces and moderation tools for managing participation. Its branded apps can appear under an organization’s identity on the web, iOS and Android, and its Zapier connections reach more than 5,000 apps, including Slack, Google and Microsoft products.

Octo says its web version can be ready in three steps and mobile apps can go live within a week. It reports building more than 450 communities for over 450 organizations and managing more than 90,000 users. Those figures provide scale context, but the practical choice still turns on the plan’s seat, admin and storage limits.

Key features

Tools for participation and oversight

Feeds and discussions support ongoing conversation, while polls and surveys gather member input. Events, payments and badges broaden the platform beyond a discussion forum. Private spaces help separate audiences, and moderation tools give administrators a way to oversee activity. This combination is useful for organizations seeking a managed private network rather than a public forum alone.

Branded apps and integrations

Branded apps are available for web, iOS and Android, and can be published in the App Store and Play Store. Custom branded mobile apps and a custom domain are included in the Mobile First and Mobile Pro plan descriptions, making those tiers more relevant to organizations that need a distinct presence. Zapier’s broad integration catalog can connect Octo to external services, though it is not a substitute for checking that a specific workflow is supported.

Security and deployment

Octo uses GDPR-compliant infrastructure, encrypted communication and role-based access control. Organizations in regulated industries can choose on-premise self-hosting, including those in banking. That option may matter where deployment control is a requirement; the Enterprise Plan also offers custom deployment options, limits and an SLA.

Pricing

Octo uses a freemium model. Packages are based on user count, and custom proposals are available. Paid pricing starts at $29/mo (annual), with VAT applying to the plans below.

Plan	Price and billing	Limits and included details
Free / Start	0.00 USD per free; free forever	0–99 users, one admin and 10 GB disk space. Includes the Octo domain, Octo mobile app, unlimited groups, basic reports and support.
Kick Start	29.00 USD per month, billed annually; alternatively $39 per month	100–999 users, five admins and 50 GB disk space.
Mobile First	Custom pricing	100–999 users, ten admins and 100 GB disk space; custom branded mobile app and your domain.
Mobile Pro	Custom pricing	1,000–5,000 users, ten admins and 250 GB disk space; custom branded mobile app and your domain.
Enterprise Plan	Custom pricing	Tailored limits, SLA and deployment options.

The free tier is a practical starting point for a small community, but its 99-user and one-admin caps constrain larger or more actively managed groups. Kick Start raises capacity to 999 users and five admins, with 50 GB of storage; organizations needing custom branding or more storage in that user range must consider Mobile First, whose price is custom. Mobile Pro extends the stated ceiling to 5,000 users, while Enterprise is the option for tailored limits and deployment. Check VAT and the annual commitment when comparing Kick Start’s $29 monthly rate with its $39 month-to-month price.

Platforms

Octo supports web, iOS and Android through branded apps, and also offers self-hosted deployment. App publication on the App Store and Play Store supports organizations seeking a mobile presence under their own identity. Self-hosting broadens the deployment choice for organizations with regulatory requirements, though the plan and deployment terms should be matched to that need.

Who it's for

Octo is best suited to organizations building a private network that need community tools alongside branded apps, events and moderation. The free plan fits groups of up to 99 users with one administrator; Kick Start targets communities of 100–999 users that can work within five admins and 50 GB of storage. Organizations needing a custom domain and branded mobile app, more capacity, or self-hosting should assess the custom-priced tiers. It is less compelling for a small group that only needs a basic discussion forum or for a larger organization that requires a known price before evaluating options.

Pros and cons

Pros: A broad mix of discussions, events, payments, surveys and badges supports more than forum-style conversation.
Pros: Branded web and mobile apps, with App Store and Play Store publication, can give a community its own identity.
Pros: The free plan includes unlimited groups and support, with no recurring fee for up to 99 users.
Pros: On-premise self-hosting, encrypted communication and role-based access control address deployment and access needs that matter to regulated organizations.
Cons: Free is capped at 99 users, one admin and 10 GB of storage, so growing communities may quickly need a paid tier.
Cons: Mobile First, Mobile Pro and Enterprise use custom pricing, which makes costs harder to compare upfront for organizations needing branded apps or larger capacity.
Cons: Kick Start’s $29 monthly rate requires annual billing; the alternative is $39 per month.

Alternatives

Choose NodeBB if a forum is the priority and its freemium model, self-hosted support and Starter plan’s 50,000 pageviews and 5 GB storage suit your needs. Whaller is worth considering when a free 100-member plan with five spheres or a per-user Pro plan better matches the way you organize communities. Pick HumHub if you prefer an AGPLv3 open-source community edition hosted on your own servers, with access to a module marketplace.

Discourse may suit a forum-led community seeking open-source software, self-hosting and a free tier with unlimited members. HuddleSpot is another option for a smaller mobile and web community; its free Starter tier supports up to 100 members and five spaces or channels. Consider Thigmo if unlimited members and events on a free plan, with paid-sale fees, are central to your needs. Nodyx is an alternative for organizations seeking a free, self-hosted platform with no feature gating. Choose Circle if a paid platform with unlimited members and a Professional plan priced at 89.00 USD per month on annual billing better fits your requirements.

Verdict

Octo is a strong choice for organizations that want a private network with community tools and branded apps, especially when self-hosting is important. The free tier gives small groups room to begin, and Kick Start offers a defined price for communities up to 999 users. Look elsewhere if predictable pricing is essential for branded apps or larger groups: Octo’s higher-capacity tiers are custom-priced.
