Overview

Newt is a file manager for people who move between local files and remote systems, especially users who want more than a transfer window. Its strongest case is the combination of remote-host work with archive, disc-image, and S3 browsing in one two-pane tool. It is less compelling if you only need a simple local file browser.

It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows and is free and open source under the GNU GPL v3. There are no stated free-tier limits, so its appeal rests on capability rather than a paid-versus-free feature ladder.

Key features

Two-pane local and remote work

The two-pane interface puts separate filesystem views side by side, a practical fit for comparing locations and copying or moving files between them. Newt connects to SSH hosts, containers, Kubernetes pods, and WSL distributions. Integrations named by the project include S3, SFTP, SSH, Docker, Podman, Kubernetes exec, WSL, and custom transports.

Remote access goes beyond transferring files: panes, terminals, file operations, searches, and mounts can run on the remote host. That breadth should suit users who manage remote environments from a file-oriented workflow; it may be unnecessary complexity for someone who only needs local folders. The interface supports viewing, copying, deleting, moving, editing, packing, and revealing files.

Archives, images, and search

ZIP, TAR, compressed TAR, and CPIO archives can be entered as directories, including nested and encrypted archives. That saves an extraction step when inspecting contents, though Newt’s value here is greatest for users who regularly work with those formats. It also browses ISO 9660 and UDF disc images without extracting them.

S3 filesystems can be mounted alongside other filesystems, and large images support range reads. Recursive filename and content searches stream results into a pane linked to the underlying files, keeping results connected to the locations they came from. These features make Newt more useful for varied storage and search tasks than a basic two-pane browser.

Controls and implementation

Direct keys cover common operations, with configurable bindings and mouse controls also available. That gives keyboard-focused users a way to tailor frequent actions without excluding mouse use. The backend uses Rust, the interface React and TypeScript, and packaging Tauri; the project also provides documentation and source-code links.

Pricing

Newt is free software, and the project identifies a free plan without stating a price. No free-tier limits are stated, and the GNU GPL v3 license makes the source code available. There are no cheaper paid tiers or seat, quota, trial, or renewal terms to weigh: this is a fit for readers seeking an open-source tool without a stated usage cap, not for buyers comparing service plans.

Platforms

Newt supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. That broad desktop coverage is useful for mixed-platform teams or people who switch operating systems; remote connections extend its reach to SSH hosts, containers, Kubernetes pods, and WSL distributions.

Who it's for

Choose Newt if you want a two-pane interface for local and remote filesystems and expect to work with remote sessions, archives, disc images, S3, or recursive searches. It is particularly suited to users comfortable with SSH, containers, Kubernetes, or WSL workflows. If your needs stop at straightforward local file browsing, its remote and filesystem breadth is more than you may need.

Pros and cons

Pros

Remote sessions do more than transfer files: panes, terminals, operations, searches, and mounts can run on the remote host.
Broad filesystem handling: archives, ISO and UDF images, and S3 can be browsed alongside ordinary files.
Free and open source: GNU GPL v3 licensing and no stated free-tier limits make it an accessible option across three desktop platforms.
Flexible controls: configurable key bindings and mouse controls accommodate different working styles.

Cons

Specialized capabilities may be overkill: users who only manage local folders may not benefit from its remote-session and filesystem features.
Keyboard-led controls may not suit everyone: direct keys cover common actions, but readers seeking a mouse-first workflow may prefer a simpler interface.

Alternatives

For more file managers in this category, browse Terminal File Managers.

Rat Commander is a free, self-contained terminal file manager for Linux, macOS, and Windows with no paid tiers or stated usage limits; choose it if that focused terminal approach matters more than Newt’s remote sessions and filesystem breadth.
FileManagerTUI is a free, open-source option for Linux, macOS, and Windows under an MIT license, with permission to use, modify, and distribute it, but provided as-is without warranty; choose it if those license terms are a better fit.
far2l is free for Linux and macOS under GNU/GPLv2 and is described as beta software to use at your own risk; consider it if you want a free option on those platforms and accept that caveat.
RTFM is free for Linux and macOS, uses the Unlicense, and has extra costs for OpenAI API calls; choose it if that model fits your needs.
Zeta is a free MIT-licensed terminal file manager for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with binaries for Linux and Windows; choose it if that terminal-file-manager format is preferable.
pointer is free, public-domain software for Linux and macOS distributed as a single binary; consider it if you want that single-binary option.
Broot is free and MIT-licensed for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with source and precompiled binaries available; choose it if those distribution options suit you better.
superfile is a free, MIT-licensed, self-installed terminal application for Linux, macOS, and Windows; consider it if you want a self-installed alternative.

Verdict

Newt is the right choice for users who want local and remote file work, remote-host sessions, and less common filesystem types in one free, open-source, two-pane application. Its main advantage is the breadth of that workflow; look elsewhere if you only need a straightforward local file manager or prefer a more focused terminal tool.
