Overview

MooseFS combines multiple servers into one storage resource. Applications can mount it as a POSIX filesystem, use it as a block device, or connect through the C API; Kubernetes is also supported. That range makes it applicable to different workloads, but it remains self-hosted infrastructure to deploy and operate rather than a hosted storage service.

Data is distributed across chunkservers, and adding chunkservers increases both capacity and bandwidth. Replication and automatic recreation of missing copies after disk or node loss provide a recovery path, though they do not remove the need to plan and manage an on-premises cluster.

MooseFS belongs in Distributed File System Software and Software-Defined Storage Software.

Key features

Flexible access: POSIX mounting, block-device use, and the C API give applications several ways to consume the same distributed storage.
Replication and recovery: Chunks are replicated across different chunkservers, and MooseFS automatically recreates missing copies after disk or node loss. This helps maintain copies through failures, but is not a substitute for choosing an appropriate cluster design.
Parallel I/O: Reads and writes can run across multiple chunkservers at once. Adding servers brings more capacity and bandwidth, which is useful when both storage demand and throughput need to grow together.
Pro availability and locality: Synchronized master servers allow a follower to take over automatically if the leader fails. Pro can also span locations, with storage policies intended to keep data near its users; these capabilities matter most for deployments that need continuity or geographically distributed storage.
Cluster-wide authentication: MooseFS 5 gates data access through the master, preventing clients from bypassing export permissions at the storage layer.
Erasure coding: Community uses single-parity erasure coding, while data replication is also supported.

Pricing

MooseFS uses a freemium model. Community is 0.00 USD per free, billed Free forever. It is GPLv2 open source, with a single active master and single-parity erasure coding. This is the sensible starting point for development, evaluation, and smaller deployments, but the single-master limit rules it out for readers who require Pro failover.

Personal costs 9.00 EUR per once, with 9 € per TiB beyond 20 TiB used raw space. It is for non-commercial use, is free up to 20 TiB used raw space, and includes the full Pro feature set. That makes it suitable for individual developers, researchers, and home labs that need Pro capabilities within the non-commercial restriction; it is not the commercial license.

Enterprise has custom pricing tailored to deployment and requires a quote. It covers commercial use, 24/7 developer support, and dedicated releases. Buyers should account for the quote-based price rather than assume the Personal terms apply. MooseFS says quote enquiries usually receive a written email reply within one or two working days.

Platforms

MooseFS supports Linux, macOS, Windows, API access, web, and self-hosted deployment. Official binary packages are offered for Linux distributions, FreeBSD, Raspberry Pi OS, and macOS; macOS packages require macFUSE and target macOS 12 or later. The native Windows client is included with Pro, so Windows users should factor that requirement into their plan choice. The software is on-premises, not a hosted deployment.

Who it's for

Community is aimed at development, evaluation, and smaller deployments. Personal targets individual developers, researchers, and home-lab users who want the full Pro feature set for non-commercial use. Commercial operators who need developer-backed 24/7 support and dedicated releases should consider Enterprise. MooseFS is less suitable for anyone seeking managed storage or a commercial license at a fixed published price.

Pros and cons

Pro: Several access methods let different applications work with a shared distributed storage pool.
Pro: Parallel I/O and scale-out capacity and bandwidth make adding chunkservers useful for both growth and throughput.
Pro: Replication with automatic recovery addresses disk and node loss; Pro adds automatic master takeover and multi-location policies.
Con: Community has only one active master, so it lacks Pro's automatic master failover.
Con: Personal is restricted to non-commercial use, and Enterprise pricing is custom, complicating cost planning for businesses.
Con: Windows client access requires Pro, while macOS packages require macFUSE and macOS 12 or later.
Con: Community support is community-driven discussion and documentation; 24/7 developer support is part of commercial Pro.

Alternatives

SeaweedFS is worth considering for a free community option that supports any cluster size, with GitHub issues, discussions, and public documentation but no guaranteed response time.

MinIO AIStor may fit a reader who wants a free single-node deployment with the full feature set, while accepting that redistribution is prohibited.

JuiceFS offers a self-hosted Community Edition with GitHub and Discord support, making it an option for readers who prefer those community channels.

StarWind Virtual SAN has a free, self-supported tier with functionality limitations; its Linux KVM version may have no limitations, which may suit readers whose deployment fits that platform.

VMware Workstation Pro is a free alternative for 64-bit Intel or AMD PCs running Windows or Linux hosts, rather than a distributed storage product matching MooseFS's role.

Ceph is a free open-source distributed storage option; block storage requires a running Ceph cluster.

DAOS is another free option for readers seeking API-accessible, self-hosted software on Linux.

OpenEBS is a free open-source Kubernetes storage option for readers whose priority is Kubernetes storage.

Verdict

Choose MooseFS if you want self-hosted storage that combines multiple access methods, parallel I/O, replication, and the ability to expand capacity and bandwidth by adding servers. Its strongest case is a deployment that can use those capabilities and, when needed, Pro's failover or multi-location features. Look elsewhere if you need managed storage, a commercial license with predictable published pricing, or Windows client access without Pro.
