Overview

Mixamo combines a library of textured, rigged characters with automatic rigging and a large collection of full-body animations. Its characters span realistic, cartoon, fantasy and science-fiction styles, and its animation library draws on performances captured from professional motion actors. The combination can shorten the path to an animated humanoid, but it does not extend to quadrupeds or other non-bipedal subjects.

Characters and animations may be used royalty free in personal, commercial and nonprofit projects, including films, video games, illustrations and 3D prints. Use of Mixamo services, content, data or outputs to create, train, test or improve AI systems or machine-learning algorithms is prohibited.

Key features

Character upload and rigging

Upload a custom character as FBX, OBJ or ZIP and Mixamo fits an automatic full human skeleton to it. This is useful when a project has a humanoid model but no rigging pipeline; it is not a substitute for a system designed for non-humanoid creatures. If the uploaded character is already rigged and needs mapping, it must be an FBX with texture media embedded.

Animation library and editing

Thousands of full-body animations can be previewed on a character and adjusted with controls including speed and arm spacing. That makes it possible to assess and tune a motion before using it, though the library and editing tools remain centered on full-body humanoid animation.

Storage and workflow

Mixamo retains only the last-used character; earlier characters and animations do not remain in a history. Creators working across several assets should keep their own records and exports rather than rely on Mixamo as a project archive. Adobe Fuse CC characters can be sent over for automated rigging, with standard skeletons and facial blendshapes enabled by default.

Pricing

Mixamo Free: 0.00 USD per free. Access requires an Adobe ID, but not a Creative Cloud subscription. Enterprise and Federated IDs and China country codes are ineligible, so this free option is not universal access.

The free plan includes Mixamo's character, rigging and animation services subject to the humanoid scope and usage restriction. There are no paid Mixamo tiers described here; its value is strongest for eligible users who need those capabilities without a subscription, rather than teams needing broader character support or retained asset history.

Platforms

Mixamo runs on the web and requires WebGL enabled in the browser. It is a standalone service, with Adobe Photoshop named as a supported host app. Adobe does not provide troubleshooting support for third-party programs.

Who it's for

Mixamo is best suited to independent creators, students and production teams who need a quick way to rig or animate bipedal characters for personal, commercial or nonprofit work. It is especially practical when an existing humanoid model needs a skeleton or when a project can use a motion from the library with modest adjustments. Look elsewhere if the work centers on non-humanoids, if a searchable archive of earlier characters and animations matters, or if the intended use involves AI training or development.

Pros and cons

Pro: Automatic full-skeleton rigging for uploaded humanoid models avoids requiring users to build a human rig from scratch.
Pro: A broad selection of textured characters and thousands of captured full-body motions gives creators multiple starting points for human-character work.
Pro: Royalty-free use covers personal, commercial and nonprofit projects, including games, films, illustrations and 3D prints.
Con: Rigging and animation support only bipedal humanoids, ruling out many creature and non-character workflows.
Con: Only the last-used character is retained, so users must manage earlier assets and motions themselves.
Con: Adobe ID eligibility excludes Enterprise and Federated IDs and China country codes.

Alternatives

For a different rigging workflow, consider Rigify, a free Blender add-on that requires Blender and supports Linux, macOS and Windows. Choose it when working inside Blender is preferable to Mixamo's standalone web workflow.

Mesh2Motion is another free option for Linux, macOS, Windows and web, with no subscription and free personal or commercial use. It may suit users looking for a cross-platform alternative while Mixamo is the clearer match when its character and motion libraries are central to the job.

Other options include Houdini, mGear Framework, dpAutoRigSystem, AdvancedSkeleton, Contour Rig Tools and Auto-Rig Pro.

Verdict

Choose Mixamo if you need a free, browser-based way to rig and animate human characters, and your Adobe ID is eligible. Its combination of automatic rigging, varied characters and a deep motion library is the main reason to choose it; the humanoid-only scope and lack of asset history are the main reasons to look elsewhere.
