Overview

Tonso is an appointment and operations platform for salons, clinics, studios and other service businesses that manage both client bookings and staff workflows. It suits operators who want booking, payment and retention tools under one roof, rather than a standalone calendar. The broad feature set is appealing, but businesses should weigh its client-funded free option against transaction costs and scheduling features that have yet to arrive.

Its listed industries span barbershops, hair and beauty salons, nail studios, spas, clinics, fitness and training studios, and laser and body treatment clinics. Businesses can also provide branded iPhone and Android apps for client bookings. Inventory tracking, commissions, multi-branch management, analytics and staff rosters extend the platform into day-to-day operations.

Key features

Appointments and walk-ins

TonsoAlign assigns clients to experts using skills, availability and workload balance. TonsoFlow learns service durations and expert pace to reduce gaps in daily schedules. These tools address two useful parts of appointment planning: matching work to staff and making better use of the day. Resource scheduling and adaptive staff scheduling are marked as coming soon, however, so businesses that depend on those capabilities should look elsewhere for now.

TonsoQueue gives walk-in clients a QR code to join a queue, check wait times and receive a notification when it is time to return. That is a practical option for businesses handling walk-ins alongside booked appointments.

Payments and retention

TonsoPay accepts deposits or full payment at booking and syncs with cash or in-store terminals. Card payments can be processed in-app or at a terminal, giving businesses more than one checkout route. TonsoEngage combines automated reminders with tailored offers, coupons, gift cards and loyalty rewards, so operators can use the same platform for visit administration and repeat-customer incentives.

Operations, apps and data

Staff rosters, commissions, inventory tracking, analytics and multi-branch management make Tonso relevant beyond appointment handling. The branded iPhone and Android apps give clients a business-specific route to book. Tonso says stored personal information is protected with encryption, firewalls and access controls, and its privacy policy references the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and Australian Privacy Principles. Hosting and analytics providers may operate in Singapore and the United States, with contractual and technical safeguards for overseas recipients.

Tonso says its team can help with questions, platform use and feedback. It lists a contact address in Enfield, NSW, and phone number 1300 368 313.

Pricing

The Free when fees are passed to clients plan costs 0.00 USD per free. It provides the entire Tonso platform when the business chooses to pass the booking fee to clients; transaction and card processing fees may also be passed on. This can suit businesses that want to avoid a monthly subscription, but the choice shifts booking costs to clients rather than removing them.

Pay-per-transaction has custom pricing and is billed per transaction. Card processing applies to in-app and terminal checkout, while the plan has no monthly subscriptions, per-seat charges or notification fees. That structure may appeal to businesses that prefer costs tied to transactions, but the lack of a published rate makes it difficult to compare total costs before choosing.

Tonso’s cheaper option does not appear to remove platform features, but it does rely on passing booking fees to clients. Businesses should consider how those charges fit their client experience, as well as transaction and card-processing costs under either arrangement.

Platforms

Tonso is available on Android, iOS and the web. Businesses can also provide branded iPhone and Android apps for client bookings. Its payment options cover in-app and terminal checkout; external software integrations are not part of the stated offer.

Who it's for

Tonso is a strong fit for appointment-led businesses that need more than a booking calendar: salons, barbershops, nail studios, spas, clinics, fitness and training studios, and laser and body treatment clinics are among its stated markets. It is especially relevant to operators combining staff scheduling, client payments and retention activity, or managing multiple branches.

It is less suited to a business that needs resource scheduling or adaptive staff scheduling immediately, since both are still marked as coming soon. Businesses seeking a predictable fixed subscription cost may also prefer a plan with a published monthly price.

Pros and cons

Broad service-business toolkit: Booking, payments, queue management, retention campaigns, rosters and inventory tracking cover more than appointment scheduling alone.
Client-facing options: QR-based walk-in queues, branded booking apps and payment at booking or terminal support different ways clients interact with a business.
Flexible fee structure: The free plan avoids a monthly subscription when booking fees are passed to clients, and the transaction plan has no per-seat or notification fees.
Some scheduling features are pending: Resource scheduling and adaptive staff scheduling are not ready, limiting the platform for businesses that need those capabilities now.
Costs may be harder to forecast: The free plan passes booking fees to clients, while the pay-per-transaction plan has custom pricing and card processing charges.

Verdict

Tonso is best for salons and related service businesses that want bookings, staff operations, client payments and retention tools together, with branded apps and walk-in queue support as useful extras. Its main draw is breadth across both client-facing and operational work; its main reasons to look elsewhere are client-passed booking fees, custom transaction pricing and scheduling capabilities still to come.
