Overview

MicroK8s is a compact Kubernetes distribution for teams building clusters on their own infrastructure, from a workstation or edge device to production. It is a strong fit when you want upstream Kubernetes with automation and security controls but prefer to keep deployment self-hosted; it is less suitable if you want someone else to operate the control plane.

Key features

MicroK8s is a minimal, CNCF-certified package of upstream Kubernetes services. A single node is enough to get started, while three or more nodes enable Dqlite-backed high availability and automatic recovery after a node fails. That makes it possible to grow from a small setup into a resilient cluster, but resilience depends on providing and maintaining multiple nodes.

Cluster API support handles cluster creation and lifecycle management through YAML manifests, with rolling upgrades for HA clusters and in-place control-plane upgrades for non-HA clusters. Security updates install automatically by default, roll back if they fail, and Kubernetes upgrades can be run with one command. These controls reduce routine maintenance without removing the operator’s responsibility for a self-hosted system.

Strict confinement restricts MicroK8s and its container workloads to explicitly granted files, system resources and hardware. Canonical maintains the core addons, while community addons add services such as certificate management and DNS. Addon examples include Prometheus, Jaeger, Istio, LinkerD, Knative, a registry and dashboard services. The GPU addon uses NVIDIA GPU Operator and supports Multi-Instance GPU, making MicroK8s relevant to AI, machine-learning and HPC workloads that use NVIDIA hardware.

MicroK8s supports multi-cluster management, autoscaling, rolling updates and policy controls. Canonical advertises a 99.9% uptime SLA and up to 15 years of security maintenance through Ubuntu Pro coverage for MicroK8s and related infrastructure; those are reasons to consider paid coverage when production continuity and long-term maintenance matter.

Pricing

MicroK8s itself has no license fees. Ubuntu Pro Personal is 0.00 USD per free for up to 5 machines, while the separate Ubuntu Pro plans add workstation or server maintenance and support:

Ubuntu Pro Workstation: 25.00 USD per year, billed per machine per year.
Ubuntu Pro with 24/7 Enterprise support — Workstation: 300.00 USD per year, billed per machine per year for full support.
Ubuntu Pro Server with unlimited VMs: 500.00 USD per year, billed per machine per year.
Ubuntu Pro with 24/7 Enterprise support — Server: 1775.00 USD per year, billed per machine per year for infrastructure support, with unlimited VMs.
Ubuntu Pro with 24/7 Enterprise support — Server full support: 3400.00 USD per year, billed per machine per year for full support, with unlimited VMs.

The free options suit personal use or deployments that do not require paid Ubuntu Pro coverage. Workstation subscriptions target workstation maintenance, while server subscriptions add coverage for server infrastructure; the 24/7 tiers are for teams that need enterprise support. The listed prices are per machine per year where stated, so server or workstation fleets multiply the subscription cost.

Platforms

MicroK8s is self-hosted and supports Linux, macOS and Windows. It can run with as little as 540MB of memory, but workloads are recommended to have at least 4GB of memory and 20GB of disk. On Windows, the installer recommends Windows 10 Professional or Enterprise and requires at least 4GB of available RAM and 40GB of storage.

Who it's for

Canonical positions MicroK8s for developer workstations, production, public clouds, edge deployments, IoT and software-vendor embedded platforms. It is particularly well suited to teams that need a consistent self-hosted Kubernetes base across these environments and value the ability to automate cluster lifecycle tasks. Choose another approach if you do not want to manage the underlying infrastructure.

Pros and cons

Pro: No MicroK8s license fee, with a path from a single node to Dqlite-backed HA, so small deployments can scale without changing distributions.
Pro: Automatic security updates with rollback, one-command Kubernetes upgrades and Cluster API automation reduce recurring operational work.
Pro: Strict confinement and maintained core addons offer useful security boundaries and a practical set of cluster services.
Con: High availability requires at least three nodes, so it is not a single-machine resilience solution.
Con: Self-hosting leaves infrastructure operations with the user; paid Ubuntu Pro is needed for Canonical’s advertised SLA and extended security maintenance.

Alternatives

Browse Container Orchestration Software or Container Management Software for more options in these categories.

Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform offers a free Apache-licensed Community Edition and supports API, web and self-hosted platforms; consider it if that edition and its broader platform support fit your deployment.
Google Kubernetes Engine is a paid service with a free tier that provides $74.40 in monthly credits per billing account for zonal and Autopilot clusters; choose it if that credit-backed tier suits your cluster needs.
Kubernetes is the free, open-source platform itself; consider it if you want the upstream project rather than MicroK8s’s packaged distribution.
KubeSphere describes its Community Edition as an enterprise-grade open-source Kubernetes container platform; consider it if that platform is a closer fit.
Rancher has a free open-source option with community support; choose it if that support model fits.
Exoscale Scalable Kubernetes Service has a free Starter Cluster with a managed control plane and no SLA; it may suit readers seeking a managed option.
HashiCorp Nomad is another option to consider for cluster management.
Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service charges 0.10 USD per month for standard Kubernetes version support per cluster; consider it if that per-cluster support model suits your requirements.

Verdict

Choose MicroK8s if you want a no-license-fee, self-hosted Kubernetes distribution that can scale from a workstation to HA clusters and brings cluster automation, confinement and maintained addons together. Look elsewhere if you want a managed control plane, or budget for Ubuntu Pro when a 99.9% SLA and long-term security maintenance are essential.
