Overview

Speechify is a text-to-speech service for turning written material into spoken audio across mobile, desktop, and web platforms. It suits readers who want broad voice and language choices, especially those who need faster playback or MP3 export. The free plan is a useful starting point, but Premium is the meaningful step up for anyone who outgrows its 10-voice and 1.5x-speed limits.

Key features

Voices and language support

Speechify offers text-to-speech alongside voice cloning and API access. Its 60-language support gives it broad reach for multilingual listening, while the plans make a sharp distinction in voice choice: Free includes 10 voices and Premium includes 1,000+ voices and 60+ languages. Voice cloning is a notable capability, but the plan details do not say which tier includes it, so it should not be the deciding reason to pay.

Playback speed and export

Free caps maximum speed at 1.5x, a reasonable ceiling for casual listening but restrictive for readers who use accelerated playback to get through substantial material. Premium raises that ceiling to 5x, which is a stronger fit for speed-focused listening. MP3 is the stated export format, making the service more useful when a reader wants an audio file rather than playback alone.

Pricing

Speechify uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 10 voices with a maximum speed of 1.5x. It is the sensible choice for occasional listening or for deciding whether Speechify's basic voice selection meets your needs, but the smaller library and lower speed ceiling are real constraints.

Premium costs 29.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes 60+ languages, 1,000+ voices, and a maximum speed of 5x. That makes it the better fit for frequent listeners who value voice variety, language breadth, or high-speed playback; readers who only need occasional text read aloud may find the free tier sufficient. Commercial use is supported. No seat counts or usage quotas are stated for either plan.

Platforms

Speechify supports Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and web access, as well as API access. That spread accommodates readers moving between phones and computers, and developers considering an API-based use. Linux is not among its stated platforms.

Who it's for

Speechify is best suited to people who regularly convert text into audio and want a large voice selection, support for 60 languages, or playback speeds above 1.5x. MP3 export and commercial-use support also make it relevant to people whose needs extend beyond personal listening. It is less compelling for occasional users satisfied with 10 voices and slower playback, or anyone who needs a platform outside its supported list.

Pros and cons

Pros: Premium combines 1,000+ voices, 60+ languages, and speeds up to 5x for listeners who need choice and pace.
Pros: MP3 export and commercial-use support broaden its use beyond listening inside the service.
Pros: Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, web, and API support cover a wide range of devices and integration needs.
Cons: Free is limited to 10 voices and 1.5x speed, so frequent or speed-focused listeners may quickly hit its ceiling.
Cons: Premium's 29.00 USD monthly price is a substantial commitment for readers who only need occasional text-to-speech.

Alternatives

Choose Altered Studio instead if you want a free tier that includes local voice cloning; its free plan limits Voice Morphing to 3 minutes per month, provides 10,000 AI Tokens, and requires an attribution license for noncommercial use.

AnnoMotion is another freemium option, with free credits after email verification and daily credits. Consider Cartesia Sonic if an API- and web-based option with monthly credits is a better fit. Inworld AI offers API, self-hosted, and web access with usage-based rates and up to 70 minutes of TTS included.

Kokoro TTS is a free alternative. Neocortex is another freemium choice, supporting web, desktop, and mobile platforms. Voice Creator Pro offers a free tier with 5,000 monthly tokens and 30-day file retention. Choose Murf AI if its free plan's 10 projects and 10 minutes of voice generation suit your needs, bearing in mind that downloads are not included on that tier.

Verdict

Speechify is a strong choice for regular listeners who want an extensive voice library, broad language support, MP3 export, and playback up to 5x. Its free tier makes it easy to start, but its limits make Premium the practical plan for sustained, faster listening. Look elsewhere if 29.00 USD per month is too much for your usage, or if the free plan's 10 voices and 1.5x maximum speed are not enough.
