Overview

Rather than focusing only on code snippets, massCode brings a snippet library, notes, and an HTTP workspace together. Snippets and notes live as Markdown files in a local vault, so they can be read, edited, moved, and backed up outside the app. That portability is useful, but the files are plain text and call for care in shared or synced environments.

The project is open source under AGPL v3 and credits Anton Reshetov. The maker says massCode collects no telemetry and does not track users. There is no built-in cloud account or proprietary sync service: users can sync the vault folder through services such as iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, Syncthing, or Git.

Key features

Snippets and Markdown notes

The Code space organizes reusable snippets across projects and languages, with folders, search, and an editor. Notes supports Markdown documents, task status and due dates, a graph of notes, mindmaps, and presentation mode. Together, these features make massCode useful as a personal developer reference workspace, not just a place to collect code. The trade-off is that the vault’s contents remain plain text, so users should avoid putting secrets in vaults that are synced, shared, or committed to Git.

HTTP work

The HTTP space supports request collections, environments, scripts, tests, sequential runs, GraphQL, and WebSocket. It can import requests from OpenAPI, Postman, or Bruno, which helps make it practical alongside an existing API workflow. HTTP secret variable values are stored outside the vault and encrypted on the device; that protection does not extend to plain-text snippets and notes.

AI, agent, and browser tools

The AI assistant can connect to OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, Mistral, or xAI with the user’s API key, or to local models through Ollama or LM Studio. Cloud API usage is billed by the provider, so the app’s free price does not make those calls free. Coding agents can use MCP to search, read, and save snippets, notes, and HTTP requests.

The browser clipper can save selected code, page text, and links into Code, Notes, or HTTP. Builds are documented for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, extending the workspace beyond the desktop app.

Pricing

massCode is free and open source, with a Free plan at 0.00 USD per free and no account required. There is no free trial because the product is free. The plan includes Markdown notes and a browser extension; there are no team workspaces or version history. The main cost is practical rather than subscription-based: users who want cross-device sync must arrange it through a folder-sync service, and cloud AI calls incur the provider’s charges.

Platforms

massCode supports macOS, Windows, and Linux, with downloads for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, Windows, and Ubuntu Linux. Browser builds are documented for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. The platform listing also includes an API.

Who it's for

massCode suits developers who want a free, local-first home for reusable code, technical notes, API requests, and browser clippings, especially those comfortable managing their own vault backups and sync. It is a less convincing choice for teams that need shared workspaces, or for users who need sensitive notes and snippets encrypted as part of the storage format.

Pros and cons

Pros

Portable local vault: Markdown files can be read, edited, moved, and backed up without depending on massCode.
Broad developer workspace: Snippets, notes, and a capable HTTP area sit together, including GraphQL, WebSocket, scripts, and tests.
Flexible integrations: Users can connect their own cloud AI provider or local models, and coding agents can access workspace material through MCP.
No telemetry, according to the maker: This may appeal to users who prefer a privacy-conscious local tool.

Cons

Plain-text vault needs careful handling: The maker advises against storing secrets in vaults that are synced, shared, or committed to Git.
Sync is your responsibility: There is no proprietary sync service, so multi-device use depends on an external folder-sync setup.
No team workspaces or version history: Shared workflows and built-in recovery of earlier content are not part of the plan.
Cloud AI has an extra cost: API usage is charged by the provider, even though massCode itself is free.

Alternatives

Choose Cacher if you want a snippet-focused service with a free tier that caps private snippets at 15 and private labels at three, alongside unlimited public snippets and limited attachment and upload allowances. SnipIT is another free option if you want separate code, AI, links, and tools vaults, web clipping, and local browser storage.

Lepton may suit users who chiefly need unlimited public or secret snippets and tags. Mac users seeking a dedicated snippet app can consider SnippetsLab, which is free with no ads, in-app purchases, or subscriptions. Code Snippets is a web-based alternative with snippet syncing across sites in its free plan, though that tier has limited functionality and no AI prompts.

For a self-hosted option, Snibox is MIT-licensed and starts out with one registered user. Opengist is another free option available for self-hosting. Gisto offers a free local mode, but that mode does not sync across devices or cloud providers.

Verdict

Choose massCode if you want a free developer workspace that keeps snippets, notes, and HTTP requests together in files you control. Its breadth and portable Markdown vault are the main reasons to pick it. Look elsewhere if you need team workspaces, built-in version history, or protected storage for sensitive notes and snippets.
