Overview

YouTrack combines issue tracking with automation rules, time tracking, and guest access. Those capabilities suit teams that need to coordinate work and record time without limiting access to full team members. It runs on web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, so it can serve teams working across different devices.

Its Cloud offer is the clearest fit for teams of up to 10: it is free and includes 30 GB of storage. Larger teams can move to paid Cloud, while server plans cover set team sizes from 15 to 100 users. The server route may suit teams seeking those capacity bands, but custom pricing makes cost comparison harder.

Key features

Automation rules: Repeatable work can be handled with rules, a useful advantage for teams that want to reduce routine coordination.
Time tracking: Teams can track time alongside their work, rather than relying on a separate time-tracking capability.
Guest access: Guests can be included, which is useful when collaborators need access without being treated as ordinary team users.

Pricing

YouTrack is freemium, with a 14-day trial. The pricing note gives a paid starting rate of $4.50/user/mo (annual), while the listed Cloud plan is $5.40 USD per month on a monthly subscription. These are different terms and rates, so teams should compare the annual starting rate with the monthly Cloud price when budgeting.

Cloud Free: 0.00 USD per free, for up to 10 users, with 30 GB storage. This is a strong starting point for small teams, though the 10-user cap makes it unsuitable once the group grows beyond that size.
Cloud: 5.40 USD per month on a monthly subscription for 11+ users, with 3 GB storage per user. It accommodates larger teams, but the per-user storage allocation is a different allowance from the free plan's 30 GB total.
Server plans: Server 15 users, 25 users, 50 users, and 100 users each include up to 3 free support agents. Each has custom pricing. These fixed capacities clarify the team-size options, but without a price it is difficult to weigh a server plan against Cloud.

Platforms

YouTrack supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. That broad coverage makes it a practical option for teams that need to access work from both computers and mobile devices.

Who it's for

Choose YouTrack if your team needs issue and work tracking with automation, time tracking, and guest access, and especially if a free Cloud plan for up to 10 users fits your size. Larger teams can consider paid Cloud or a server plan sized to their user count. Look elsewhere if comparing server costs upfront is essential, or if the 10-user free limit is too restrictive and the paid terms do not suit your budget.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free Cloud covers up to 10 users and includes 30 GB storage, giving small teams a meaningful way to start without a subscription.
Pro: Automation rules, time tracking, and guest access bring several useful work-coordination capabilities together.
Pro: Support for six desktop and mobile platforms gives teams flexibility in where they access the service.
Con: Free Cloud stops at 10 users, so growing teams must assess a paid option.
Con: Monthly Cloud is priced at 5.40 USD per month, while the stated $4.50/user/mo rate is annual; comparing them requires attention to billing term.
Con: Server plans have custom pricing, which limits upfront cost comparison.

Alternatives

Consider Linear if its free plan's unlimited members, two teams, and 250 issues suit your needs better than YouTrack's 10-user free cap. Choose OpenProject if its free Community plan, with no minimum users and community support, fits your requirements. Plane is another option, with a free plan for 12 users and a Pro plan that includes time tracking and work logs. Consider Tuleap as another freemium option for cloud or on-premise use with a quote tailored to users, hosting, and support.

Ora is another freemium option with a free plan. Yodiz is a freemium alternative with a free Starter plan for three users. Kanban Tool is another freemium option. Team O'clock is a freemium alternative with a Growth plan priced at 3.00 USD per month per active member, starting at 10 monthly active members.

Verdict

YouTrack is a sensible choice for small teams that want a capable free Cloud plan, or larger groups that need automation, time tracking, and guest access across platforms. Its main appeal is the combination of those tools with a 10-user free tier; look elsewhere if server pricing transparency or a different free-plan size is a deciding factor.
