Overview

Wise is a cross-border money app for sending funds to bank accounts, receiving payments from abroad and keeping an eye on exchange rates. It suits people who want upfront transfer costs and repeat-payment tools, but its variable currency fees mean the price still depends on the route.

Key features

Sending, rates and repeat payments

Wise sends to bank accounts in more than 140 countries and uses the mid-market exchange rate. It displays fees before payment and says it adds neither hidden fees nor exchange-rate markups. That transparency helps when comparing a specific transfer, though it does not make transfers free: fees vary by currency and start from 0.33%.

Sending to another Wise account carries no sending fee, but conversion fees can still apply. Transfers can be funded by Apple Pay, Google Pay, card or bank transfer. Tracking, scheduling and repeating a previous transfer are practical additions for people managing regular payments. Rate alerts notify users about exchange-rate changes and the mid-market rate.

Delivery depends on the route; many popular routes arrive within a day, the same day or instantly. Wise also supports bill payments and receiving money from abroad, while recipients receive transfers into bank accounts.

Safeguards and support

Two-factor authentication protects accounts and transactions, and Wise holds customer money separately from its own funds with established financial institutions. Photo ID may be required for some currencies or larger transfers. Wise says it is regulated by authorities worldwide and licensed in most US states; it is authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority for issuing electronic money. For inward remittances to India, it works with a local bank partner with RBI approval.

Customer support is available by email, live chat and phone, 24/7 in English and 14 other languages. Wise Business also lists a team-finances feature, though the personal account is the plan described below.

Pricing

Wise personal account and transfers — 0.00 USD per free (no subscription or plans; pay for what you use). Registration is free, and the plan includes variable transfer and conversion fees that vary by currency and start from 0.33%. A 200 USD monthly ATM withdrawal allowance is shown as free. There is no free trial; this is an ongoing free account rather than a time-limited offer.

The free account makes sense for occasional senders who want no subscription commitment, but the variable charges matter more than the account price for anyone transferring often. Check the fee for the intended currency before sending; free Wise-to-Wise sending does not remove conversion charges.

Platforms

Wise is available on Android, iOS and the web, so users can manage transfers from a phone or browser.

Who it's for

Wise is a strong fit for people making international bank transfers who value a visible fee before payment, mid-market rates, transfer tracking and tools for recurring payments. Rate alerts can also suit people willing to watch exchange movements before sending. It is less compelling for someone who needs a fixed transfer price across currencies, since fees vary by currency and conversion remains chargeable.

Pros and cons

Pros: Upfront fee display and a mid-market exchange rate make the cost easier to assess before paying.
Pros: Scheduling, repeat transfers and tracking support recurring payments without having to rebuild each transfer.
Pros: Two-factor authentication and separately safeguarded customer funds address account and fund protection.
Cons: Transfer and conversion fees vary by currency, so the free account does not mean free international transfers.
Cons: Photo ID may be required for some currencies or large transfers, which can add a verification step.

Alternatives

Consider TransferGo if a free multicurrency account and free transfers between TransferGo accounts matter more than Wise's rate alerts and scheduling tools. Remitly is another option for bank deposits or cash pickup, with example US-to-France pricing including a 0.00 USD bank deposit and a 2.99 USD cash pickup. Choose Paysera if a personal multi-currency IBAN account and 30 free SEPA or SEPA Instant transfers monthly better match your needs.

Xe Money Transfer is a freemium option for Android, iOS and web. OFX may suit someone seeking its Global Business Account, which can be registered for free and has no minimum account balance requirement. CurrencyFair charges 3.00 EUR per month when sending money or transferring out. Panda Remit gives a stated transfer fee of 6.99 USD per month for transfers from the United States to global destinations, with fees potentially varying by amount and destination. Global66 is a free option available on web, iOS and Android.

Verdict

Choose Wise for international bank transfers when upfront fees, mid-market rates and repeat-transfer management are priorities. Its broad recipient-country coverage and no-subscription account are useful, but currency-based charges still apply; look elsewhere if predictable flat fees matter more.
