Overview

OPSI is an open-source client-management system for organizations that need to deploy software and operating systems, track inventory, and manage patches and configuration centrally. It suits IT teams administering Windows and Linux fleets across one or more sites; macOS management is part of the Enterprise offer. Its broad management scope is a strength, but device thresholds and annual license terms make the paid tiers a poor fit for small teams that need licensed extensions.

Key features

OPSI automates non-interactive software installation, including Windows updates, MSI packages, setup programs, and system packages. It can also install Windows client and server systems and common Linux distributions, either unattended or from images. That combination makes OPSI relevant both for maintaining existing machines and provisioning new ones.

Regular hardware and software inventory helps teams keep track of managed devices. OPSI can collect hardware information even when a machine has no operating system installed, a practical advantage during initial provisioning. For distributed organizations, central administration can span multiple sites while each site retains its own depot server, configuration, and software packages.

The Directory Connector supports Active Directory, Samba 4, and OpenLDAP. Single sign-on is available through an extension supporting Microsoft Entra ID and Keycloak via SAML 2.0. OPSI documentation recommends SSL/TLS server identity verification and describes multifactor authentication and SAML security options. The WebGUI runs in a modern browser without client-side installation.

Pricing

OPSI has two free options, but their limits differ. Community costs 0.00 EUR per free and allows unlimited devices, core features, and one worker process. It is the clearest fit for teams that can work within the core feature set and do not need paid extensions.

Basic is also 0.00 EUR per free, with up to 30 devices, core features and listed extensions, one worker process, and one setup per user. The Basic license must be renewed each year and excludes support for non-free modules. Its device cap and renewal condition suit smaller setups, not growing fleets that need licensed-module support.

Professional costs 499.00 EUR per year for the 100 devices shown, with a minimum purchase of 100 devices, listed extensions, and up to two worker processes. Enterprise costs 899.00 EUR per year for the 100 devices shown, also with a 100-device minimum; it adds the macOS Agent, SSO, audit log, and other extensions, with unlimited worker processes. These annual licenses make more sense for organizations that can use the added capacity and extensions than for small deployments.

Enterprise Cloud costs 1199.00 EUR per year, starting at 100 devices. It includes a managed OPSI server, listed cloud features, and extensions, but supports product caching only, not configuration caching. That trade-off favors teams seeking managed hosting who can accept the caching limit. OPSI also advertises a 42-day trial and a paid starting price of €4.99/yr; the listed annual licenses and minimum purchases are important to consider before choosing a paid setup. uib offers phone and email support through support contracts, plus training, workshops, and webinars.

Platforms

OPSI supports Windows, Linux, and macOS endpoints, with API, web, and self-hosted options. Its deployment model is hybrid. The WebGUI's browser access avoids a client-side installation for administrators, while the Enterprise plan's macOS Agent is a plan-specific reason for Mac fleets to examine that tier.

Who it's for

OPSI is best suited to IT teams that want software deployment, OS installation, inventory, patching, and configuration management in one system, particularly across multiple sites. Community accommodates unlimited devices when core features suffice. Basic fits a small setup of up to 30 clients, while Professional and Enterprise are aimed at deployments able to meet the 100-device minimum. Teams that want hosted infrastructure can consider Enterprise Cloud, weighing its product-only caching against the managed server.

Pros and cons

Pro: It combines software distribution, OS installation, inventory, patching, and configuration, reducing the need to treat provisioning and ongoing management as separate jobs.
Pro: Community has no device cap, and multi-site administration supports site-specific depots, configurations, and packages.
Pro: Directory and SSO extensions cover Active Directory, Samba 4, OpenLDAP, Microsoft Entra ID, and Keycloak integration.
Con: Professional and Enterprise require at least 100 devices, a substantial threshold for smaller organizations seeking paid extensions.
Con: Basic is limited to 30 clients per user, requires yearly renewal, and excludes support for non-free modules.
Con: Enterprise Cloud does not provide configuration caching, which may rule it out for teams that need that capability.

Alternatives

For narrower deployment needs, compare OS Deployment Software, Patch Management Software, IT Automation Software, and Application Deployment Software.

Clonezilla is a free, open-source option for Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted use; choose it when that free platform mix better matches the need.
AOMEI Backupper offers a perpetually free Windows PC backup plan and a paid yearly plan; choose it when Windows backup is the priority rather than OPSI's endpoint-management scope.
Canonical MAAS has a free self-support plan for all machines, but without HA support, RBAC, a knowledge base, Sev 1 response SLA, or phone or ticket support; consider it when those trade-offs suit the deployment.
Foreman is free, open-source, and self-managed; choose it if those terms are the deciding criteria.
ManageEngine OS Deployer has a free plan for four workstations and one server, making it an option for deployments within that cap.
Acronis Cyber Disaster Recovery Cloud is a paid service with a free trial and pay-as-you-go pricing for used disaster-recovery cloud storage and compute; consider it when disaster recovery is the requirement.
UBports Installer is a free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
DeployR Enterprise is a paid option with a public-sector suite priced per endpoint; consider it if that suite fits the need.

Verdict

Choose OPSI if your IT team needs one system for deployment, operating-system installation, inventory, patching, and configuration across a multi-site fleet. Its free Community tier removes a device ceiling, while paid plans add extensions, capacity, or managed hosting. Look elsewhere if you need licensed features for fewer than 100 devices, or if Enterprise Cloud's lack of configuration caching is a blocker.
