Overview

Founded in 2008 and headquartered in Mountain View, California, Khan Academy offers more than 840 free courses in core K–12 and early-college subjects. Personalized practice is designed to help learners build mastery and address gaps, making the platform useful alongside classroom instruction or for independent study. The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

The core platform is available on the web, Android, and iOS. Its mobile app adds interactive exercises, mastery levels, synced progress, offline video downloads, and a scratchpad, so learners can keep studying when they are away from a connection. Khan Academy Kids is a separate, free, ad-free app for children ages 2–8, with interactive books, games, and creative lessons.

Key features

Academic courses and practice: The broad catalog covers core subjects from K–12 through early college, with personalized learning aimed at mastery and learning gaps. That makes Khan Academy a useful supplement or independent practice option, but it does not award completion certificates or offer degree programs.
Khanmigo tutoring: The AI tutor guides learners toward answers across subjects from elementary school through college. It is intended to support problem-solving rather than serve merely as an answer source. Paid subscriptions require the subscriber to be at least 18, live in the United States, and have a U.S. billing address.
Teacher support: Free Khanmigo teacher tools help with lesson planning, feedback, summaries of student work, rubrics, and exit tickets. Khan Academy for Teachers combines standards-aligned practice, progress tracking, and AI support, giving educators a way to connect student practice with classroom work.
School and district tools: Teachers can import Google Classroom rosters. District plans add Clever or ClassLink rostering and single sign-on, along with administrator reporting, data insights, and implementation support on the Enterprise plan. District plans state that student privacy and data security are SOC-audited and FERPA- and COPPA-compliant, and include a VPAT for WCAG 2.1AA.

Pricing

The core learning platform is free, as is the Khanmigo Teacher Tools subscription, though teacher-tool availability depends on educator locale. These options make Khan Academy accessible for independent learners, teachers, and parents without a subscription fee; the free learning platform does not include Khanmigo's paid parent and learner subscriptions.

Khan Academy: Free. The free learning platform serves independent learners, teachers, and parents.
Khanmigo Teacher Tools: Free. Free teacher tools, with availability dependent on educator locale.
Khanmigo Parent Subscription: 4.00 USD per month, billed $4 / month. An individual subscription for parents, available only in the United States.
Khanmigo Learner Subscription: 4.00 USD per month, billed $4 / month. An individual subscription for learners, available only in the United States.
Enterprise Starter: 10.00 USD per year, billed $10/student/year for 1,000 or fewer student licenses at U.S. schools and districts. It gives smaller school systems a stated per-student price and a defined license ceiling.
Enterprise: Custom pricing for more than 1,000 student licenses. It includes administrator reporting and data insights, single sign-on, automated Clever or ClassLink rostering, live professional learning, and implementation support.

Khanmigo's paid parent and learner plans are not an option for subscribers under 18 or those outside the United States or without a U.S. billing address. Schools needing more than 1,000 licenses must consider Enterprise rather than the per-student Starter plan.

Platforms

Khan Academy is available on Android, iOS, and the web. The mobile app's offline video downloads and synced progress support study across connected and offline settings. District plans also list Clever and ClassLink rostering and single sign-on; teachers can import Google Classroom student rosters.

Who it's for

Khan Academy is a good fit for K–12 and early-college learners who want free academic courses and focused practice, and for parents and teachers looking for supplementary learning resources. Khan Academy Kids is tailored to children ages 2–8. Educators can use the teacher tools for planning and feedback, while schools and districts can consider its enterprise offerings for roster management and administration. Learners who need a certificate or degree should choose a different route.
