Overview

WordPress.com is a hosted publishing and site-building service for people who want a WordPress site without arranging hosting separately. It suits bloggers, creators, and organizations that may grow into memberships or commerce, but its free tier is visibly branded and its more advanced tools sit behind higher-priced plans.

Hosting, security protections, and a global CDN are included, with unmetered bandwidth across all plans. That removes bandwidth ceilings as a concern, though storage still varies by tier. WordPress.com is associated with Automattic, founded in 2005 and headquartered in San Francisco.

It spans Blogging Platforms, Personal Website Builders, and Website builders, as well as AI Website Builders, Nonprofit Website Builders, and No-Code Website Builders.

Key features

Publishing essentials include scheduled posts, theme customization with custom code, blog analytics, and built-in memberships. Newsletters can start free with unlimited subscribers, and payment buttons support PayPal and Stripe. These cover a broad range of creator needs without requiring a separate publishing service; Commerce is the tier that adds ecommerce tools and a WooCommerce experience.

Plugin uploads open the door to a marketplace of more than 60,000 plugins, but direct uploads and developer tooling are reserved for Business and Commerce. Those tiers also add SFTP/SSH, WP-CLI, Git commands, GitHub Deployments, real-time backups, and one-click restores. MailPoet Business email marketing is included for 500 subscribers on those same tiers.

Free sites show WordPress.com ads; Personal removes them. Paid plans list unlimited pages, posts, users, and visitors, while storage rises from 6 GB on Personal to 13 GB on Premium and 50 GB on Business and Commerce. Annual paid plans include a custom domain free for the first year. A Jetpack app supports mobile site management on iOS and Android, and support ranges up to free 24/7 priority expert support.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, has no expiration date, and includes 1 GB of storage, unlimited pages and posts, and basic stats for 7 days. It is a reasonable way to start publishing, but the ads and short analytics window make it a poor fit for a polished business presence or readers who need longer-term insight.

Personal costs 2.75 USD per month, billed every 12 months, at the lowest displayed rate. Its 6 GB storage and unlimited pages, posts, users, and visitors suit a personal site or blog; it also turns off ads. Premium costs 5.50 USD per month, billed every 12 months, and raises storage to 13 GB while retaining those unlimited allowances. It is the more suitable step for a creator whose media needs outgrow Personal, though neither tier includes the advanced developer, backup, and email tools named for Business.

Business costs 17.50 USD per month, billed every 12 months, with 50 GB storage and unlimited pages, posts, users, and visitors. It is aimed at teams needing plugin uploads, developer access, backups, or MailPoet Business for 500 subscribers. Commerce costs 31.50 USD per month, billed every 12 months, excluding taxes; it includes the 50 GB tier and adds ecommerce tools and a WooCommerce experience.

WordPress VIP costs 25000.00 USD per year for an enterprise platform, with a demo offered. Agencies has custom pricing in USD; it is shown per site and excludes taxes. Choose these only when an enterprise or agency arrangement is the relevant buying model, rather than as substitutes for the standard site plans.

Platforms

The Jetpack site-management app is available for iOS and Android. WordPress.com also includes hosting, so site owners do not need to arrange a separate hosting provider.

Who it's for

WordPress.com is a strong fit for publishers who want managed hosting alongside familiar site-building and publishing capabilities, and for growing sites that may need memberships, payments, plugins, or ecommerce. The free tier works for low-stakes experiments; Personal is a clearer choice for a public site where ads would undermine its presentation. Readers who need custom code and routine publishing alone may find the upper-tier tools unnecessary, while those who require plugin uploads, backups, or developer workflows should budget for Business or Commerce.

Pros and cons

Pro: Hosting, unmetered bandwidth, security protections, and a global CDN are bundled, reducing the need to assemble core infrastructure separately.
Pro: The service can scale from free publishing to payment buttons and Commerce ecommerce, with memberships and unlimited newsletter subscribers supporting creator-led sites.
Con: Free sites carry WordPress.com ads, and only 1 GB storage plus basic stats for 7 days makes the free tier constrained for sustained growth.
Con: The advertised monthly rates for Personal, Premium, Business, and Commerce are billed annually; plugin uploads, developer tools, and real-time backups require at least Business.

Alternatives

For a more narrowly blogging-oriented service, Hyvor Blogs has a Personal plan at 5.00 EUR per month billed annually at €50/year, with one user, one blog, 1GB media storage, and custom domains; it suits solo bloggers who want that defined scope. Micro.blog costs 5.00 USD per month billed monthly and offers custom-domain hosting, automatic cross-posting, custom themes, and full template editing, making it worth considering for cross-posting-focused bloggers.

Medium is a freemium web and mobile option for readers and writers drawn to a membership model with unlimited story access, ad-free reading, audio and offline reading, custom domains, and publications. For education, Edublogs offers a free plan with 256 MB storage, 50 posts and pages daily, and a 30 MB maximum file size; those caps make it a more bounded option than WordPress.com’s free allowance of unlimited pages and posts.

Writizzy is another freemium web blogging option, while Tistory is a free web and mobile service. Write.as offers a free, branded personal blog with a daily post range and unlimited views, and Hashnode has a free plan alongside a Pro tier at 5.00 USD per month for up to ten publications per account. Each is a reasonable alternative to compare if its own publishing format or plan structure better matches your needs.

Verdict

Choose WordPress.com if you want managed WordPress hosting with a path from a basic blog to memberships, payments, plugins, and ecommerce. Its breadth and included infrastructure are the main case for it; the principal reason to look elsewhere is that removing ads is paid, annual billing underlies the displayed paid monthly rates, and the most useful developer and backup capabilities start at Business.
