Overview

Jubler is a free, open-source desktop editor for creating, editing, and converting text-based subtitles. It is best suited to subtitle editors who want precise timing controls and batch tools across Linux, macOS, or Windows. Its feature set is broad for a free tool, but the most useful media-preview features depend on VLC.

Key features

Jubler handles more than 20 subtitle formats, including SRT, ASS/SSA, WebVTT, TTML, ITT, DFXP, and YouTube subtitles, and it exports SRT and VTT. That range helps when a workflow crosses formats, while time shifting, frame-rate conversion, and splitting or joining entries and files cover common timing and file-organization work.

An interactive timeline uses draggable subtitle blocks and two-point synchronization, giving editors a visual way to align text rather than relying only on text fields. Spell checking and regular-expression find and replace can speed up cleanup, especially across repeated wording. ASpell is suggested for spell checking.

Jubler includes automatic captioning and translation mode with Azure Translator support. Configurable quality validation and TED guidelines compliance checking offer ways to review subtitles before delivery, while command-line tools support batch processing and automation. These capabilities make it more appealing for recurring or structured work than for someone seeking only a quick one-off caption edit.

Video and frame preview, audio waveform visualization, and editing subtitles during playback require VLC. That dependency is worth addressing before choosing Jubler if synchronized visual or audio review is central to the workflow; the generic Java version does not support embedded preview at all.

Pricing

Free: 0.00 USD per free. The desktop subtitle editor has no paid tier, and the project relies exclusively on donations. This is a strong fit for individual editors and teams willing to use desktop software without a subscription, though no paid support tier is described. The free plan does not remove the VLC requirement for video preview and waveforms, and the generic Java build lacks embedded preview.

Platforms

Jubler runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Downloads include macOS builds for Apple Silicon and Intel, Linux builds for x86_64 and arm64, Windows, and a generic Java version. The range makes it practical across several desktop environments, but preview capability varies: VLC is required for video preview and audio waveforms, while the generic Java version has no embedded preview.

Who it's for

Jubler suits subtitle editors who need format conversion, detailed timing adjustment, validation, or repeatable batch processing without paying for a license. It is less compelling for users who want a browser-first service or expect preview to work without installing VLC. The project states that it collects no user data and sends no usage information to a service; issues and support are directed to GitHub.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 20 formats and SRT/VTT export give editors room to move subtitles between workflows.
Pros: Timeline synchronization, timing adjustments, validation, and command-line batch tools serve both detailed edits and repeat jobs.
Pros: Free, open-source availability across Linux, macOS, and Windows avoids a subscription commitment.
Cons: VLC must be installed for video preview and waveforms, adding setup to workflows that depend on media review.
Cons: The generic Java version lacks embedded preview, limiting its usefulness for editors who need to check timing against media.
Cons: Support is directed to GitHub, which may be less suitable for users who expect dedicated commercial assistance.
