Overview

Jami is a free, open-source communication app built around private messaging, calls and peer-to-peer connections. It is best suited to people who want chat and conferencing without a relay server or personal details at signup. Its breadth is a strength, but client-specific feature differences make it less predictable across devices.

Key features

Jami combines instant messaging, group chats, audio and video calls, and recorded audio and video messages. Video conferences and rendezvous points do not rely on third-party hosting; screen sharing, media streaming and file sharing broaden its use for collaboration. That range makes it a plausible single tool for private conversations and group calls, though users should check that the features they need are supported by their client.

Jami describes its network as fully peer to peer, with no server relaying data between users. Communications are end-to-end encrypted by default, use perfect forward secrecy and comply with the X.509 standard. Multiple devices can be linked to one account, and account creation requires no personal information. These are meaningful advantages for privacy-conscious users; peer-to-peer operation may be a poor fit for people whose communication setup depends on a relay service.

Jami can also function as a regular SIP client. Extensions include green screen, watermark, auto answer, local AI transcription, audio filters and video segmentation, but extensions are unavailable on iOS. Since features vary by client, users choosing Jami for a particular extension or capability should confirm support on their intended device first.

Jami offers an OpenClaw channel plugin, while bot accounts and API access are supported on desktop Linux, macOS and Windows. Its documentation also describes browser-based web access. The project is led by Savoir-faire Linux Inc. and supported by a global community of free-software contributors; users can turn to its forum or contact the project by email for questions.

Pricing

Jami costs 0.00 USD per free for its free/libre communication software. There is no free trial because the plan is free. No limits are stated for file size, speed, bandwidth, features, accounts or storage, so Jami is a strong fit for users who want a no-cost communication tool without stated usage caps. There is no paid tier described for users who need a different support or capacity arrangement.

Platforms

Jami supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows, and also offers an API and extensions. Support varies by client: in particular, iOS users do not get extensions, while OpenClaw bot account and API access are supported on desktop Linux, macOS and Windows. The web version is accessed through a browser.

Who it's for

Jami is most compelling for people who prioritize end-to-end encrypted communication, account privacy and a broad free feature set. It also suits users who want SIP functionality or peer-to-peer conferences without third-party hosting. It is less suitable when a user needs the same feature set across platforms, especially extensions on iOS, or depends on a server-mediated communication model.

Pros and cons

Pros: Messaging, calls, group chats, conferences, screen sharing and file sharing are brought together in a free tool, making it useful beyond one-to-one chat.
Pros: Default end-to-end encryption, no personal information required to create an account, and no relay server are meaningful privacy choices.
Pros: Multiple linked devices and SIP client capability give it flexibility for users with varied communication needs.
Cons: Features vary by client, so users may need to verify support before relying on a specific capability.
Cons: iOS users cannot use extensions, narrowing the feature set on that platform.
Cons: Bot accounts and API access are limited to desktop Linux, macOS and Windows, which rules out those integrations on other listed platforms.

Alternatives

Jami belongs in consideration alongside other encrypted and secure communication tools; compare the Encrypted Messaging Apps, Secure Messaging Apps and Secure Video Conferencing Software lists.

Olvid is a free-plan alternative with unlimited messages and attachments, secure group discussions and ephemeral messages; consider it if those messaging features are the priority.
Wire is another free-plan option and says its source code is fully open source and available on GitHub for verification; choose it if source-code verification is a deciding factor.
Session offers open-source encrypted messaging and attachments up to 10mb; it is an option for readers who prefer that narrower messaging focus.
Signal offers free messaging and calling, with a mobile account required for desktop use; consider it if that setup suits your devices.
SimpleX Chat is a free alternative with Android, API, iOS, Linux, self-hosted and Windows support; consider it if self-hosting is important.
Delta Chat is free and open-source software, an alternative for readers seeking that combination.
imo offers free calls and messages, though carrier data charges may apply; it is a simpler option for those core functions.
Messenger is a free messaging app for readers who want a straightforward messaging alternative.

Verdict

Choose Jami if you want free, end-to-end encrypted messaging and calls in a peer-to-peer app that also handles conferences, sharing and SIP. Its strongest case is the combination of account privacy and a wide communication toolkit without a stated usage cap. Look elsewhere if your decision depends on consistent features across clients, particularly iOS extensions, or on a server-relayed setup.
