What Nheko is

Nheko is a free native desktop client for Matrix, designed to provide a familiar chat-app experience on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Users can create, join, and leave rooms, handle invitations, share files and emoji, reply to messages, view read receipts, and redact messages. Voice and video VoIP calls are available, with support varying by platform. The app offers custom stickers and emoji, light, dark, and system themes, and separate profiles through a command-line option. Typing, message, and mention notifications are supported, while presence and status messages depend on server settings. Nheko supports end-to-end encryption, but its current implementation has never been audited and the project gives no security guarantees. A D-Bus API enables third-party plugins, although it is unavailable on Windows and macOS. The project lists nheko-krunner and rofi-nheko as known plugins and does not provide plugin binaries. A secret service such as KDE Wallet or GNOME Keyring is required when the desktop environment lacks one.
