Overview

JackTrip brings musicians together in virtual studios with real-time, full-duplex audio and high-definition video. The maker says latency can fall below 25 ms, but that depends on each participant’s setup and connection, so this is a capability rather than a guarantee for every group.

Audio runs at the highest resolution a user’s device supports, from 44.1 kHz to 96 kHz. That range and the low-latency focus suit collaborative playing better than tools centered on exchanging project files; the connection conditions still matter to the experience.

Key features

Browser access: Musicians can join through a web browser using an embedded microphone. That lowers the barrier for guests who do not want to install a desktop app, while the browser route may not suit users who need a particular DAW workflow.
DAW integration: The Audio Bridge plugin comes in VST and Audio Unit formats and works with Logic Pro, GarageBand, Ableton Live, Studio One and FL Studio. It gives DAW users a route into their existing tools rather than requiring a separate music-making setup.
Streaming and recording: One-click livestreaming and recording, with simulcasting to YouTube, Twitch and Facebook, make JackTrip relevant to groups that want to share a performance as well as rehearse.
Self-hosting: The software project is free and open source, and users can host studios on their own servers at no charge. That is the clearest no-subscription route, though the managed-plan session and video limits do not apply to the free tier because those managed features are unavailable there.

Pricing

JackTrip is freemium, with managed plans billed annually and a 28-day trial. The paid plans include unlimited studio usage, but each sets limits on session length, musicians, concurrent sessions and video quality.

Free — 0.00 USD per free (billed $0 billed annually): Join sessions and manage your own server. Managed studio usage, session length, musician count, concurrent sessions and video quality are not part of this tier; streaming, simulcasting, recordings, backing tracks and green rooms are also excluded. Choose it to join or self-host without paying, not to run a managed studio.
Lite — 4.08 USD per month (billed $49 billed annually): Unlimited studio usage, sessions up to 3 hours, up to 5 musicians, 1 concurrent session and video up to 360p. It is the least expensive managed option for small, short sessions; the 5-person cap and lower video ceiling make it a poor fit for larger groups or sharper video needs. Free for the first 4 weeks.
Essential — 8.25 USD per month (billed $99 billed annually): Sessions up to 6 hours, up to 10 musicians, 1 concurrent session and video up to 1080p, alongside unlimited studio usage. It doubles Lite’s group size and raises its video ceiling, making the extra annual cost more compelling for groups that need those limits. Free for the first 4 weeks.
Advanced — 16.58 USD per month (billed $199 billed annually): Sessions up to 12 hours, up to 30 musicians, up to 3 concurrent sessions and video up to 1080p, with unlimited studio usage. This is the plan for longer rehearsals, larger ensembles or groups running sessions in parallel. Groups up to 480 people can contact sales. Free for the first 4 weeks.

Paid plans include community forums, help docs, email and web support; the free plan includes forums and help docs. JackTrip’s privacy policy describes security measures to protect personal information while acknowledging that security risks cannot be eliminated entirely.

Platforms

JackTrip supports Linux, macOS, Windows and the web. Browser access is useful for participants who need to join without a desktop installation; the listed platform range also covers musicians working across major desktop systems.

Who it's for

JackTrip suits musicians rehearsing, creating or performing remotely, from small groups to professional orchestras. Lite is aimed at compact groups with brief sessions; Essential better serves ensembles that need room for ten people and 1080p video; Advanced fits groups requiring longer sessions, more musicians or multiple concurrent studios. The free tier is most useful to people willing to manage their own server or simply join a session.

It is less suitable for a managed session larger than 30 musicians on the stated Advanced plan, or for a group that needs managed studio controls without paying. The low-latency promise also depends on participant connections and setup, so it should not be treated as a universal result.

Pros and cons

Pro: Full-duplex audio up to 96 kHz and latency that can fall below 25 ms target the timing and sound quality demands of playing together remotely.
Pro: Browser joining, DAW plugins and one-click streaming cover guest access, production workflows and public performance in one service.
Pro: Free, open-source self-hosting provides an alternative to paying for managed studios.
Con: The free plan excludes managed studios and streaming, simulcasting, recording, backing tracks and green rooms, so it is limited for groups seeking a ready-managed performance space.
Con: Lite restricts sessions to five musicians, three hours and 360p video; groups that outgrow any of those limits must move to a higher tier.
Con: Even Advanced caps managed sessions at 30 musicians and three simultaneous sessions; larger gatherings require a sales conversation.
Con: Audio latency depends on users’ setups and connections, making the stated sub-25 ms capability conditional.

Alternatives

Music Collaboration Software is the broader category for readers comparing tools beyond JackTrip.

Soundtrap is worth considering if broad device coverage and a free account with limited loops and instruments matter more than JackTrip’s remote virtual-studio focus.
Jamulus is a fit for readers seeking free, open-source software with no usage limits stated; it supports a broader set of platforms, including self-hosted use.
SonoBus is a free alternative for users who want standalone apps and audio plugins across desktop and mobile platforms.
Sessionwire may suit teams that prioritize guest audio/video/file transfer, chat and a free Plugin Suite; its free plan offers unlimited connections.
Pibox is a better direction for project and file collaboration: its free tier allows two users, unlimited guests, two projects and 1 GB of storage.
Highnote suits people sharing and reviewing tracks, with a free Starter tier offering 15 total tracks, 50 GB of cloud storage and unlimited shared spaces.
Sesh is an option for music creation in a desktop or browser workflow; its free Starter tier includes synths, effects, high-quality samples and one-hour version history, with limited projects and exports.
Amped Studio is worth a look for browser-based production: its Starter plan includes five projects and 16 tracks, while Premium is 6.99 USD per month.

Verdict

Choose JackTrip if your group needs remote musical performance with low-latency, high-resolution audio, DAW integration or built-in livestreaming. Its free self-hosting route is appealing, and the managed plans scale clearly from small sessions to ensembles of 30. Look elsewhere if your priority is file-based collaboration, or if your managed sessions exceed Advanced’s limits; the audio experience also depends on everyone’s connection and setup.
