Overview

Instapaper is a read-it-later service for collecting online content and reading it later, including offline. It suits readers who want an unlimited free library with syncing, or who need Premium’s search, PDF support and deeper annotation tools. Its strongest case is straightforward saving across devices; readers who need advanced research or collaboration features should compare alternatives.

It saves articles, videos, recipes, song lyrics and other web content with one click. Folders help organize a library, and saved articles and videos sync across supported devices. Instapaper is operated by Instant Paper, Inc.; its maker was founded in 2008.

Key features

Offline access makes saved material useful away from a connection, while syncing lets readers move between supported devices. The free tier allows unlimited article, video and page saves, but notes are capped at five per month. That limit matters to readers who annotate heavily; Premium removes it.

Readers can highlight and comment on article text, then store, retrieve, quote and share highlighted passages. API integration is included on both tiers, so third-party apps can connect without requiring a subscription.

Premium adds full-text search, a permanent archive of articles and PDF reading, including saved web PDFs and uploaded personal PDFs. Kindle integration is also reserved for Premium. On mobile, subscribers get AI Voices and text-to-speech playlists, plus speed reading that processes articles up to three times faster.

Pricing

Free has no published price and includes unlimited saves, syncing across web, iOS and Android, folders and API integration. It is the sensible starting point for readers who mainly want to save and read pages later. Its five-note monthly limit and lack of Premium’s search, permanent archive, PDF reader and Kindle integration are the main trade-offs.

Premium monthly costs $5.99 USD per month, billed monthly. Premium yearly costs $59.99 USD per year, billed annually; the yearly plan saves over 15% compared with monthly billing. Both Premium options include unlimited notes, full-text search, permanent archive, PDF reader, Kindle integration and mobile AI Voices and text-to-speech playlists. Choose monthly for flexibility or annual billing for the lower effective cost; both suit readers who rely on search, PDFs or richer reading tools. Support is included on Free and Premium.

Platforms

Instapaper supports web, iOS, Android, macOS and a Chrome extension. Its supported devices include iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle, Kobo and Boox eReaders. The free plan syncs across web, iOS and Android, and saved content can be read offline.

Who it's for

Instapaper fits readers who want a broad, unlimited save-for-later library and a reliable route to offline reading. Free is enough for light annotators who do not need full-text search or PDF tools. Premium makes more sense for readers who regularly search an archive, keep PDFs, send material to Kindle or use mobile audio and speed reading. The five-note free limit makes it less compelling for annotation-heavy use without a subscription.

Pros and cons

Pro: Unlimited free saves of articles, videos and other pages, with offline reading, suits readers building a large library without a save quota.
Pro: Highlights can be commented on, retrieved, quoted and shared, giving saved reading practical annotation and reference value.
Pro: Premium combines search, permanent archiving, PDF reading and Kindle integration for readers who need more than basic capture.
Con: Free notes are limited to five per month, a real constraint for readers who annotate frequently.
Con: Full-text search, PDFs, Kindle integration and mobile audio features all require Premium, so the free tier is less useful as a searchable research archive.

Alternatives

Omnivore is the better fit for readers who want a free, self-hosted option and can deploy it on their own server; its cloud application was deprecated in November 2024.

Matter is another freemium read-later option, with an unlimited library on its free plan and HD text-to-speech in Premium.

PaperSpan suits readers who want free mobile offline reading, highlights and the ability to send one article at a time to Kindle.

Couch is an iOS and macOS alternative with unlimited saves and basic features on its free plan.

Readwise Reader is worth considering if a paid service with a free trial is acceptable; its Readwise plan costs $9.99 USD per month billed annually.

Cubox offers a free plan and a Pro annual plan at $29.00 USD per year for readers comparing another freemium option.

wallabag is a free alternative for readers seeking a service available on web, iOS and Android.

Screvi is a paid alternative with unlimited highlights, sources and articles for $6.99 USD per month or $59.99 USD per year.

Verdict

Choose Instapaper if you want unlimited free saves, cross-device syncing and offline reading, with a clear upgrade path for search, PDFs and Kindle. Its main drawback for free users is the five-note monthly cap; readers who annotate often or need Premium tools should budget for the subscription, while those who want free self-hosting should look at Omnivore instead.
