Overview

InfluxDB connects data sources through more than 400 Telegraf plugins, official client libraries, and several ingestion interfaces. Its deployment range runs from single-node Core to self-managed Enterprise and managed cloud options, including Amazon Timestream for InfluxDB. This flexibility is useful, but the editions are not interchangeable: Core has no high availability or enterprise security, while service quotas apply to Cloud Serverless.

InfluxDB 3 supports retention policies and horizontal scaling. InfluxData says it can handle millions of writes per second, billions of series without cardinality limits, and query responses under 10 milliseconds. These capabilities make it a candidate for demanding time-series workloads, though the practical fit will depend on deployment and workload.

Key features

Querying and ingestion

SQL support sits alongside InfluxQL, and a built-in Python processing engine adds an option for data processing. Ingestion works through line protocol, HTTP API, client libraries, Telegraf, and the influxdb3 CLI. Official libraries cover Python, JavaScript, Go, Java, and C#. That breadth can reduce integration friction for teams using those tools, while the range of interfaces gives them several ways to bring data in.

Storage and deployment

Data is stored as compressed Parquet files in object storage with S3 API compatibility. Buyers can choose self-managed Enterprise, single-tenant Cloud Dedicated, multi-tenant Cloud Serverless, AWS-managed Amazon Timestream for InfluxDB, or open-source single-node Core. That makes InfluxDB adaptable to different operating models; Core, however, is deliberately limited to a single node and lacks high availability.

Security and support

InfluxData states that InfluxDB is ISO 27001, ISO 27018, and SOC 2 certified, with end-to-end encryption and granular access controls across managed and self-managed InfluxDB 3 products. Enterprise includes SAML/SSO and OAuth. Cloud Dedicated offers SAML/SSO and private networking as add-ons. Enterprise and Cloud Dedicated include a technical support SLA; Core is community supported. Teams requiring enterprise authentication or guaranteed technical support should account for the edition and add-on differences.

Pricing

InfluxDB uses a freemium model with a free plan, usage-based paid options, and a 30-day trial. The self-managed Enterprise trial is 30 days by default, and InfluxData says it can help extend it.

InfluxDB 3 Core: Custom pricing. It is a single-node option for local development, prototyping, and edge deployments, not a high-availability production choice.
Cloud Serverless: $0.00 USD per free, then usage-based, with a $250 free credit. It is multi-tenant, service quotas apply, and it has no high availability, so it suits workloads that can accept those constraints.
Cloud Serverless usage: $0.0025 per MB written, $0.012 per 100 query executions, $0.002 per GB-hour, and $0.09 per GB transferred out. There is no minimum commitment; upgrading includes a $250 free credit. Costs track usage, so the relevant trade-off is that write, query, storage, and transfer volumes all affect spend.
Cloud Serverless metered rates: Data In is 0.00 USD per month, Query Count is 0.01 USD per month, Storage is 0.00 USD per month, and Data Out is 0.09 USD per month. Each is billed pay for what you use.
Cloud Dedicated: Custom pricing for single-tenant managed cloud. It is the managed option for teams seeking dedicated tenancy; SAML/SSO and private networking are add-ons.
Amazon Timestream for InfluxDB: Custom pricing, billed at AWS consumption pricing to your AWS account. It is fully managed on AWS and includes high availability, native IAM, and VPC integration.
InfluxDB 3 Enterprise: Custom pricing based on CPU configuration. Self-managed Enterprise offers unlimited scale, no service quotas, high availability, and read replicas, alongside a 30-day free trial.

Platforms

InfluxDB supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms. The combination of self-hosted and managed deployments lets teams choose between operating the system themselves and using a hosted service.

Who it's for

InfluxDB is a strong fit for teams handling real-time time-series data across industrial operations, observability, or AI applications. Its SQL and InfluxQL support, multiple ingestion routes, and broad client libraries suit organizations integrating data from varied sources. Core is better for local development, prototypes, and edge deployments than for systems that require high availability or enterprise security. Cloud Serverless is a more constrained managed starting point; workloads requiring high availability or no service quotas should consider Enterprise or AWS-managed Timestream.

Pros and cons

Pro: Multiple deployment models span single-node open source, self-managed Enterprise, and managed cloud, giving teams choices about operations and tenancy.
Pro: SQL and InfluxQL, a Python processing engine, and numerous ingestion interfaces support varied data workflows.
Pro: Enterprise has no service quotas and includes high availability and read replicas, while Amazon Timestream includes high availability and AWS IAM/VPC integration.
Con: Core lacks high availability and enterprise security, and relies on community support.
Con: Cloud Serverless has service quotas and no high availability; usage-based charges also mean consumption affects cost.
Con: Cloud Dedicated SAML/SSO and private networking cost extra.

Alternatives

Choose GreptimeDB if its freemium model and managed Enterprise plan from 290.00 USD per month fit better. LinDB is a free, open-source Apache 2.0 alternative. TDengine is worth considering if a fully open-source TSDB with clustering under the AGPL license is the priority. QuestDB offers an Apache 2.0, self-managed, single-instance open-source edition with community support. VictoriaMetrics provides open-source single-node and cluster versions. Prometheus is a free, open-source monitoring and alerting toolkit under Apache 2.0. DolphinDB has a free Community Edition with a perpetual license, limited to two nodes, each with up to two CPU cores and 8 GB RAM. Grafana k6 is another freemium option, with a free plan limited to 500 virtual user hours per month.

Verdict

Choose InfluxDB when a time-series workload needs flexible ingestion and query choices plus a deployment model matched to its operational requirements. Its strongest case is the range from Core to high-availability Enterprise and managed services. Look elsewhere if you need high availability on Core, predictable rather than usage-based Serverless charges, or bundled Cloud Dedicated SAML/SSO and private networking.
