Overview

Qt Creator is a cross-platform IDE for developing desktop, embedded, mobile, and browser-based applications. It is best suited to developers working with C++ or QML who want project setup, interface design, builds, debugging, and tests in one environment. Its breadth is useful, but commercial Qt licensing and third-party extension risk deserve attention before adoption.

Key features

Editing and building

The editor combines semantic highlighting and syntax checks with completion, search, and refactoring, helping developers move between understanding a codebase and changing it without leaving the IDE. It understands C++ and QML; Python support is more conditional, providing some language services when a language server is available. Teams centered on Python should not assume a full native Python workflow from that support.

Build integration covers CMake, qmake, Qbs, and Autotools, while generic projects can be imported with configurable build commands. That range accommodates different project setups, though generic projects require configuration rather than a turnkey build path. Project management, build tools, and dev container support are also included.

Debugging, analysis, and testing

Integrated debuggers and analysis tools support tasks such as spotting memory leaks, profiling execution, and examining CPU use. Unit-test integrations include Boost.Test, Catch2, Google Test, Qt Quick Test, and Qt Test, with CTest support as well. This makes Qt Creator a strong fit for teams that want to connect coding with diagnostics and testing; its value is less pronounced for developers who only need a lightweight editor.

Extensions and AI

Qt Creator supports AI agents in the IDE, with GitHub Copilot and an MCP Server extension among the documented options. Qt also offers official extensions for Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, and Android Studio, plus a Qt-supported CLion extension. External vendor extensions are not checked by Qt for security flaws or malicious intent, so assess an extension before installing it.

Pricing

Qt Creator follows a freemium model, with a free plan and paid options from €546/user/yr. The open-source plan costs 0.00 USD per free. It is the natural starting point for personal projects and open-source work, but use of the Qt framework is subject to LGPL/GPL obligations.

Commercial Qt licenses have custom pricing. They are subscription-based, typically invoiced as pre-payment, and offered on one-year or three-year terms with auto-renewal. Qt Creator is included among the Qt tools, but each developer using Qt commercially needs an active designated developer license; distribution licenses may also be required for Qt-based devices. The free edition therefore is not a substitute for checking the licensing needs of a commercial product.

The commercial product evaluation lasts 10 days and is for evaluation only, not production or actual product development.

Platforms

Qt Creator is listed for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows development. Binary packages are available for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Who it's for

Choose Qt Creator if your work spans Qt-based applications, especially C++ or QML projects that benefit from integrated builds, debugging, and testing. It is less compelling if your primary language is Python and you need more than conditional language-server support, or if commercial Qt licensing requirements do not suit your project.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad C++ and QML workflow, from project creation through debugging, with multiple build systems and integrated testing frameworks.
Pros: Analysis tools address memory leaks, execution profiling, and CPU use within the development environment.
Cons: Commercial Qt work requires active developer licensing, and device distribution may require additional licenses.
Cons: Python language services depend on a language server, and external extensions need user security assessment.

Alternatives

Xojo may suit readers who prefer a freemium option with a desktop plan at 499.00 USD per once, including support, two simultaneous activations, and new releases for 12 months.

Eric is a free alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
GoLand is a paid alternative with a free plan and trial.
Apache NetBeans is free for commercial and non-commercial use under Apache License 2.0.
BlueJ is a free Java development environment designed for beginners.
CLion offers a free non-commercial plan for individual learning, self-education, and open-source contributions without commercial use.
Eclipse IDE is a free, open-source alternative with packages for several development areas, including Java and C/C++.

Verdict

Qt Creator is a strong choice for developers building Qt-based applications who want editing, builds, debugging, and testing together, particularly in C++ and QML projects. Look elsewhere if you need stronger Python language support or want to avoid the commercial licensing obligations attached to Qt-based development and distribution.
