Overview

HumHub brings communication, collaboration and knowledge sharing into one platform. Its intended uses range from company intranets and knowledge bases to project hubs and customer or partner communities, serving small teams, nonprofits and larger organizations. The combination of built-in tools and more than 80 optional modules allows a broad range of setups, though organizations should expect to decide which modules and hosting model suit their needs.

Key features

Personalized dashboards, activity streams, configurable notifications, granular permissions, full-text search, file management and social interactions form the core. Together, they support shared updates and information, while permissions help distinguish who can access particular spaces or material.

Optional modules include News, Messenger, Calendar, LDAP, SAML SSO, surveys and translation tools. Listed integrations include OnlyOffice, Collabora Online and a RESTful API. Private spaces, event hosting and moderation tools make HumHub relevant to both internal networks and managed communities; the module breadth is useful for tailoring a deployment, but the platform's fit depends on the modules an organization chooses.

Organizations can run HumHub on their own infrastructure or use managed SaaS hosted on European servers. The maker says SaaS hosting is under ISO 27001 and GDPR-compliant, while self-hosting keeps data in the organization's own environment. That choice gives organizations control over hosting, but also puts the operational decision squarely on them.

Pricing

The Community Edition is free under the AGPLv3 open-source license and is self-hosted on the organization's servers. It includes access to the Module Marketplace and free upgrades, with support through the community and GitHub. It suits teams able to manage their own infrastructure and rely on community support; it does not include the paid support arrangements offered with the commercial editions.

Professional Edition is 144.00 EUR per month, billed monthly. The displayed indicative price covers up to 100 users with SaaS hosting and no onboarding. It includes premium email/helpdesk support, all updates and upgrades including security patches, prioritized bug fixing and long-term maintenance of the latest two major releases. This is the more appropriate tier for organizations wanting managed hosting and a defined support channel, though the quoted setup excludes onboarding.

Enterprise Edition uses custom pricing. It includes a dedicated hosting cluster, a 99.5% uptime SLA, a dedicated Customer Success Manager, a custom contract, DPA and security review, and multi-site or multi-tenant deployments. This tier is aimed at organizations with more demanding hosting or deployment requirements. Networks with 1,000 or more users require a custom quote.

Platforms

HumHub is available on the web, through Android and iOS apps, and as a self-hosted deployment; an API is also available. Its responsive interface is designed for smartphones, tablets and desktops. Organizations can choose between running the platform themselves and managed SaaS, rather than being limited to one hosting approach.

Who it's for

HumHub is a strong fit for organizations building an intranet, knowledge base, project hub or community that need private spaces, moderation and room to extend the platform. It is particularly compelling when self-hosting or a European-hosted SaaS option is important, and when a team can make use of its modules and integrations. Organizations that need premium support can choose Professional, while larger or multi-site deployments may suit Enterprise. It is less suitable for teams that want a fixed, turnkey setup without making hosting and module choices.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 80 optional modules and integrations such as OnlyOffice, Collabora Online, LDAP and SAML SSO allow organizations to adapt the platform to different collaboration needs.
Pros: Self-hosting and managed European SaaS provide a meaningful choice between keeping data in an organization's own environment and outsourcing hosting.
Pros: A free self-hosted edition includes Marketplace access and upgrades, making it possible to use the platform without a subscription.
Cons: The free edition relies on community and GitHub support, which may not meet organizations that need premium support and prioritized bug fixing.
Cons: The Professional price applies to an indicative SaaS setup for up to 100 users and excludes onboarding; larger networks need custom pricing.

Alternatives

MangoApps is a paid alternative with a free trial and a Communications & Intranet plan at 9.00 USD per month, billed from 200 employees; consider it if that employee-based pricing and trial better fit your evaluation.

Akumina is another paid alternative for organizations considering intranet software across web, mobile, API and self-hosted platforms.

Blink is worth considering if a paid, per-user option is preferable: its Core plan is 4.50 USD per month per user and includes branding, internal communications, real-time collaboration and a knowledge hub.

Flip offers a Growth plan at 4.95 EUR per year for up to 300 employees, with the platform only and add-ons available on request; it may suit organizations comparing a capped employee plan.

Jalios Intranet is a paid alternative with a free trial and a personalized offer based on product and employee count, including preferential rates for some organizations.

Axero is another paid option with a free trial; its Standard plan includes workspaces and groups, communication tools, content management, notifications, task management and gamification.

Appspace Signage is a freemium web-based alternative.

eXo Platform is a paid alternative with a free trial; its Silver plan has one space, 1 GB storage per user and a 10-user minimum, while Gold includes 30 spaces and 1 GB storage per user.

Verdict

Choose HumHub if your organization wants a flexible intranet or community platform, values control over hosting, and can make practical use of its module ecosystem. The free self-hosted edition is a credible starting point, while Professional adds SaaS hosting and paid support. Look elsewhere if you want a narrowly defined, turnkey service or need to know enterprise pricing upfront.
