Overview

Tracetest brings distributed traces into integration and end-to-end testing. A test can check the response, trace data, span timing, and side effects across services, helping teams catch failures that a response-only assertion could miss.

Teams can run existing Cypress, k6, Playwright, and Postman tests, or trigger tests with HTTP, gRPC, and Kafka. The CLI supports CI/CD pipelines, and YAML definitions can be kept in source control. This makes Tracetest a natural fit for teams already using these tools; it is less compelling for teams seeking a production-ready hosted testing service, since Core is documented for local use only.

Key features

Trace-based assertions: Check spans, timing, responses, and distributed-system side effects. That wider view is useful for validating microservice behavior across service boundaries.
Trace analysis: Tracetest renders traces and can flag instrumentation problems, missing attributes, naming conventions, and possible exposure of sensitive data, including passwords and API keys. This gives developers and QA engineers a way to review trace quality as well as application behavior.
Existing test and trigger support: Bring in Cypress, k6, Playwright, and Postman tests, or use HTTP, gRPC, and Kafka triggers. The range helps teams add trace checks without replacing their current test tools.
CI/CD and scheduled monitoring: Run tests from the CLI in CI/CD, or schedule tests and suites as synthetic monitors with webhook alerts. The combination suits teams that want repeatable checks during development and on a defined schedule.
Integrations: The integrations include Datadog, Grafana Tempo, Jaeger, Honeycomb, Cypress, Playwright, GitHub Actions, and k6. These connections make it more relevant to teams already using those systems.

Pricing

Tracetest Open Source: 0.00 USD per free. The open-source version remains available, with no free trial required. It is the only plan to consider: Kubeshop discontinued the commercial Cloud and Enterprise offerings on October 31, 2024, so teams looking for those commercial options should look elsewhere.

The free plan is best for teams able to run and maintain the open-source software themselves. Its key limitation is not a stated seat or usage cap, but deployment: Core is intended for local environments and is not suitable for production. There is no longer a commercial Cloud or Enterprise route for teams that need those offerings.

Platforms

Tracetest covers API, Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and self-hosted use. The CLI installation instructions cover Mac, Linux, and Windows; the server can be installed with a provided command. Core is deployable as a Docker container for local environments, but not production.

Who it's for

Tracetest is aimed at developers and QA engineers building distributed microservice systems, including with Go, Rust, Node.js, and Python. It is a good match when trace assertions, instrumentation checks, or scheduled synthetic tests are important and a local or self-hosted workflow is acceptable. Teams that need a production-ready Tracetest deployment or the discontinued commercial Cloud and Enterprise offerings should choose another tool.

Support is centered on documentation and Slack, with an offer to meet founder Ken Hamric for help getting started. That can help new users orient themselves, though it is not a substitute for the ended commercial offerings.

Pros and cons

Pro: Tests can assert on trace contents, span timing, and cross-service side effects, not only the response.
Pro: Existing Cypress, k6, Playwright, and Postman tests can be used, and CLI execution fits CI/CD pipelines.
Pro: Scheduled synthetic tests can send alerts through webhooks, extending checks beyond the development pipeline.
Con: The documented Core deployment is for local environments and is not suitable for production.
Con: Commercial Cloud and Enterprise offerings have been discontinued, ruling them out for teams seeking those plans.

Alternatives

Grafana Cloud Application Observability is worth considering for teams seeking a freemium option with an always-free plan that includes 2,232 host hours and a Pro plan billed per host hour plus a monthly platform fee.
Uptrace suits readers who want a cloud option with 50 GB free per month, then usage-based pricing, and unlimited users, services, and hosts; it also offers a free trial.
AWS X-Ray is an alternative for teams comfortable with pay-as-you-go pricing and a free allowance for traces recorded and retrieved or scanned.
Apache SkyWalking is another free, open-source observability platform with self-hosted deployment.
Honeycomb is an alternative with a free tier capped at 20 million events per month, 100 million metrics data points per month, and two triggers, plus a Pro plan.
Hubble is an open-source observability layer that requires Cilium.
Jaeger is a 100% open-source, cloud-native project with self-hosted deployment.
Oracle Log Analytics is another freemium option.

Verdict

Choose Tracetest if your team builds microservices and needs OpenTelemetry traces to inform integration tests, CI/CD checks, or scheduled synthetic monitoring. Its main advantage is bringing trace-level verification into existing test workflows for free. Look elsewhere if you need production deployment of Core or a commercial Cloud or Enterprise offering.
