Overview

Built by volunteers since 2003, HandBrake converts video from nearly any format into MP4, MKV, or WebM files. Its codec range spans H.264 and H.265 through AV1, VP9, Theora, and FFV1, giving users room to choose among widely supported output options. Batch conversion makes it more practical for collections than a one-file-at-a-time utility, while hardware acceleration can help with supported workflows. Output tops out at 4K.

HandBrake is free and open source, with community support and documentation. The project also provides a privacy policy, problem reporting, and a GitHub repository. The current version is 1.11.2.

Key features

Format and codec range: MP4, MKV, and WebM containers pair with codecs including H.264, H.265, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, VP8, VP9, AV1, Theora, and FFV1. That breadth is useful when balancing compatibility and encoding choice.
Batch conversion: Queue multiple video jobs together rather than repeating the conversion process for each file.
Hardware acceleration: Supported, giving users an acceleration option for conversion work.
4K ceiling: Output reaches 4K, but users needing higher resolution should look elsewhere.
No audio extraction: HandBrake is not the right tool for pulling an audio track out as a separate file.

Pricing

HandBrake is free to use and free and open source. There are no paid tiers to weigh against the free version, so it is a straightforward choice for users who want a capable transcoder without a subscription or purchase.

Platforms

HandBrake runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS; the macOS application requires macOS 10.13 or later. This cross-platform availability makes it viable for mixed-device households and teams, though each user should confirm their operating system meets the requirement.

Who it's for

Choose HandBrake if you need a no-cost video transcoder with multiple container and codec choices, batch processing, and output up to 4K. It is a particularly sound fit for people managing repeated conversions or working across Windows, Mac, and Linux. If your task is audio extraction rather than video transcoding, its scope rules it out.

Pros and cons

Pro: A broad set of containers and codecs gives users meaningful output choices across common and newer formats.
Pro: Batch conversion and hardware acceleration add useful capacity for larger or more demanding video workflows.
Pro: Free, open-source availability across three desktop platforms avoids a paid-plan decision.
Con: Audio extraction is not supported, so it cannot replace an audio-focused converter.
Con: The 4K maximum limits its fit for workflows that require higher-resolution output.

Verdict

HandBrake is the right pick for users who want a free, open-source video converter with broad codec support, batch processing, and 4K output across desktop platforms. Its main reason to look elsewhere is equally direct: it does not extract audio, and it is not built for output beyond 4K.
