Overview

The service runs the corresponding GOV.UK check for right-to-work and right-to-rent share codes, then returns the answer as structured data. Results can include the outcome, dates, conditions, applicant photo and GOV.UK PDF, giving systems and staff material to process and retain as needed. An audit trail is supported.

Right-to-work checks are aimed at UK employers, recruitment agencies and hiring platforms. Right-to-rent checks apply to landlords and letting agents in England and cover every adult tenant. The service says it is independent of HM Government, the Home Office and GOV.UK, so it should not be mistaken for a government-operated product.

Key features

API and callbacks

API access suits teams that want checks inside an existing hiring or rental process rather than relying only on a separate web page. Asynchronous checks can send signed results to a callback URL, and that capability is included even with the sandbox plan. The documentation provides cURL, Node.js and Python examples; Node.js integration does not require an SDK.

The free home-page option allows two live checks a day without an account, useful for occasional one-off checks. That daily allowance is separate from the Free plan’s monthly API allowance.

Data handling and security

Live check inputs and GOV.UK pages are retained for up to seven days to investigate failed or disputed checks, then deleted automatically. The maker says customer and applicant data is processed in the UK and EEA, with no transfers outside those regions during a check. API keys are stored as SHA-256 hashes, traffic uses TLS, and Stripe handles card data rather than the service storing it on its servers.

A published data processing agreement and countersignable PDF can help procurement teams assess the service. The contact page gives support@checksharecode.co.uk for general enquiries, security issues and other support.

Pricing

The freemium structure makes it possible to start without a card, but the free API allowance is capped and stops rather than continuing at a charge.

Free: Free, with 10 live checks a month, a hard stop at 10, no card requirement, a sandbox key and a limit of five requests a second. It suits development or very light usage, not an active workflow that must keep processing after its quota is reached.
Pro: £14.00 per month, billed £14/month, for 100 live checks a month, then £0.25 per check, with 20 requests a second and email support from Matthew. This is the clearest fit for smaller teams that need live checks and predictable entry costs, provided they account for overage charges.
Scale: £49.00 per month, billed £49/month, for 500 live checks a month, then £0.10 per check, with 50 requests a second. The larger included quota and lower overage rate suit higher-volume workflows.
Enterprise: custom pricing, invoiced monthly, with volume-based rates, an SLA, a named contact, a signed DPA and higher rate limits. It is aimed at organizations needing procurement and service commitments beyond the published tiers.

Platforms

Right To Work Checker supports web and API access. The API route is the stronger reason to choose it for product integrations; the web option and two daily checks without signup also accommodate occasional manual use.

Who it's for

Choose it if you are an employer, recruitment agency or hiring platform handling UK right-to-work checks, or an England landlord or letting agent checking adult tenants, and want share-code results returned in a format software can process. The callback support and examples lower integration friction, while the seven-day retention window is relevant to teams deciding how quickly to preserve records they need. It is less suitable for workflows that cannot pause at the Free cap or that need a published Enterprise price before procurement.

Pros and cons

Pro: JSON responses can include outcome, dates, conditions, photo and a GOV.UK PDF, giving integrated workflows more than a bare pass/fail result.
Pro: Signed asynchronous callbacks are available on every plan, including sandbox, so teams can build around event-driven results before upgrading.
Pro: UK-and-EEA processing, short automatic retention, hashed API keys and a countersignable DPA address concrete data-handling and procurement concerns.
Con: The Free plan stops at 10 live checks a month, so it cannot serve as a continuing no-cost production tier.
Con: Pro and Scale charge per check beyond their included quotas; teams with variable demand need to budget for overages.
Con: Enterprise pricing is custom, which makes cost comparisons harder before a quote.

Alternatives

Right to Work Verification Software is the category overview for comparing more options.

GOV.UK Right to Work Checking Service is the alternative to consider if you want a free web service rather than a paid API; no price or usage limits are stated for its plan.
Rightcheck is a paid option across Android, iOS and web with custom pricing, suitable to consider if those platforms matter to your selection.
Credas Right to Work is worth comparing if you want a free trial and a monthly Gateway plan with one flat fee per search, five users and one branch or brand.
CheckWorkRights is an employers-only paid service with commercial-agreement pricing, an alternative for employer-led procurement.
EmploymentCheck Right to Work Check offers per-check pricing at £2.50 per check or £2.25 per unit for its G-Cloud 14 cloud service; it may suit buyers preferring one-off charges over a monthly quota.
Experian Data Quality Solutions is a paid API and web option with a free trial and pricing tailored to budget and requirements, for buyers seeking a broader consultation-led solution.
Verifit has API and web access, with per-seat pricing and all capabilities included; consider it if a seat-based quote is preferable to per-check quotas.
GryphonHR is another paid API and web option, with Basic at $50.00 USD per month on a one-year term for 1 to 100 annual new hires and unlimited users.

Verdict

Right To Work Checker is a strong fit for UK employers, recruiters and England rental professionals who want share-code checks to feed directly into software. The combination of structured results, signed callbacks and low starting cost is its main draw; monthly caps and overage charges are the main reasons to compare alternatives before putting it at the center of a high-volume workflow.
