Overview

Founded in 2009, Grammarly is now part of Superhuman. Its mix of proofreading, tone guidance, and AI features makes it broader than a basic grammar checker, while a free tier gives occasional writers a way to use it without a subscription. That free tier has a firm allowance of 100 AI prompts per month, so regular users may find it limiting.

Grammarly says it is trusted by over 40 million people and 50,000 organizations. That reach may reassure buyers looking for an established writing tool, though the best fit still depends on how much AI assistance and organizational control they need.

Key features

Proofreading, style suggestions, and tone detection cover the core editing work: correcting text, refining its expression, and gauging how it may come across. Paragraph rewrites, tone suggestions, a humanizer, and AI detector agents extend the offering into drafting and review. Brand voice controls and team collaboration are also supported, making Grammarly relevant beyond solo writing.

Prompt limits shape how useful the AI tools are in practice. Free users get 100 prompts monthly; Plus members get 2,000 AI prompts each month. The larger allowance is a meaningful step up for frequent use, but it is still a quota rather than unlimited access.

Grammarly supports 24 languages, while English is also identified as a supported language. Its privacy commitments are notable for teams handling sensitive text: user content is not sold, monetized for advertising, or used to train third-party models. The SOC 2 Type 2 report covers security, privacy, availability, and confidentiality controls.

Pricing

The Free plan costs ₹0 INR per month and is aimed at individuals. It includes 100 AI prompts per month, making it suitable for proofreading and occasional AI assistance, but the cap may be restrictive for people who regularly rewrite or generate text.

Plus is for individuals or teams and costs ₹392 INR per member per month when billed annually, or ₹1,000 when billed monthly. Its 2,000 AI prompts per member per month make it the clearer choice for frequent AI-assisted writing. Plus is available only via local payment methods, a practical barrier for anyone who cannot pay that way.

The Pro plan is listed at 12.00 USD per month and includes 2,000 AI prompts per member per month. Enterprise has custom pricing for larger organizations and unlimited members. It adds proactive AI across applications, dedicated support, BYOK encryption, custom roles and permissions, data loss prevention, and cost center visibility. Enterprise also includes confidential mode. Organizations that need those controls and unlimited membership have a stronger reason to move beyond an individual plan; smaller teams may not need the added scope.

Enterprise support is dedicated, while Grammarly also offers a help center, basic customer support, and priority support. The available plan terms do not establish how those support options map to every tier, so buyers should compare the service level they need before choosing.

Platforms

Grammarly offers a browser extension, a desktop app, and mobile apps for iPhone, iPad, and Android. The extension supports Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. This spread suits people who write across devices and browsers, rather than readers looking for an app limited to one platform.

Who it's for

Grammarly is a strong fit for individual writers who want corrections and tone suggestions in one tool, especially if they can stay within the Free prompt allowance or justify Plus for a larger monthly quota. Teams may value collaboration, brand voice controls, and the enterprise security features. It is less compelling for someone who needs an unrestricted AI allowance or cannot use local payment methods for Plus.

Pros and cons

Pros: Proofreading, style guidance, tone detection, and paragraph rewrites address both editing and revision needs.
Pros: A free plan and a broad browser, desktop, and mobile presence lower the barrier to trying it and support varied workflows.
Pros: Enterprise combines unlimited members with confidential mode, permissions, and data loss prevention for larger organizations.
Cons: Free's 100 monthly AI prompts may run out quickly for frequent users.
Cons: Plus's ₹392 INR annual-billing price depends on local payment methods, and its monthly price is ₹1,000.
Cons: Even the larger Plus allowance is capped at 2,000 AI prompts per member per month.

Verdict

Choose Grammarly if you want proofreading, tone and style guidance, and AI writing features across browsers and devices, with a free starting point and a much larger prompt allowance on paid plans. Its main drawback is the combination of capped prompts and Plus's local-payment restriction. Writers who need more than those quotas allow, or cannot use the required payment method, should consider another tool.
