Overview

JustMeme is a web meme maker with AI captioning and a free public API. It suits people who want to turn an idea into a shareable image without signing up, as well as developers who need straightforward API access. Its unlimited, watermark-free PNG exports are appealing; the API’s shared rate limit and template copyright caveat are worth weighing.

Key features

Describe a meme idea in plain English and JustMeme’s AI chooses a template and writes both captions. That can speed up making a reaction image when you have a concept but not a specific template or wording in mind. The generator runs on Cloudflare AI with hosted-model fallbacks, and there is no daily generation cap.

The library contains more than 2,300 templates, and the editor offers control over caption wording, size, outline, padding, color, shadow, and text style, with a real-time preview. That combination supports both quick AI-assisted drafts and more deliberate manual adjustments. Finished memes download as full-resolution PNGs or can be shared by link.

The public REST API supports template browsing, search, trending templates, and AI generation without an API key. It returns JSON, supports CORS, and works with standard HTTP clients, but has no client library. Its limit is 60 requests per minute per IP, shared with AI generation; projects needing higher limits must request them through a GitHub issue. The maker says commercial API use is permitted and asks for attribution when possible.

JustMeme says its site has no tracking and warns that some templates may use copyrighted source images. That warning matters if you plan to publish or commercially reuse a meme: permission to use the API does not remove the need to consider rights in the source image.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited memes, no signup, and no watermark. Text-to-meme generation, the template library, AI captions, watermark-free PNG exports, and commercial use are included. There is no free trial because the product is free, and there is no stated daily cap on AI generation. For casual creators, the lack of account and watermark restrictions makes it practical for repeated use; API users still face the 60-requests-per-minute-per-IP limit.

Platforms

JustMeme is available on the web and through its API. The maker says the site works in a phone browser for creating, editing, and downloading memes, so a dedicated mobile app is not required for that workflow.

Who it's for

JustMeme fits people making group-chat images, Discord reactions, work or coding jokes, crypto memes, and other reaction images. It is also a reasonable fit for developers who want a free, keyless REST API for meme templates and AI generation, provided their traffic fits the shared per-IP limit. It is less suitable when a project needs a higher guaranteed API quota or certainty that every template image is clear for commercial reuse.

Pros and cons

Pros

No-cost, watermark-free output: the free plan includes unlimited memes and full-resolution PNG downloads without signup.
AI and manual control together: AI handles template selection and captions, while the editor allows detailed text styling.
Useful API access: browsing, search, trending templates, and generation are available without an API key, with JSON and CORS support.

Cons

Shared API quota: all API use, including AI generation, is limited to 60 requests per minute per IP.
No client library: developers must call the API through standard HTTP clients rather than an official library.
Template rights require care: some source images may be copyrighted, which complicates reuse beyond personal memes.

Alternatives

AI Meme Generators is the broader category to browse if you want to compare tools. Choose AI Meme Generator if you want another free web option with unlimited creation, no credits or daily caps, and no watermark or login. GottaMeme may suit creators who value manual editing and downloads but can work within daily limits of 10 AI captions and two AI visuals.

MemeFast is an option if you want Android or iOS apps alongside the web version, with a free tier that includes templates and an editor but has watermarks and ads. Consider MemeClip.ai if you need its broader platform coverage, including mobile apps, an extension, and an API, and can accept limited monthly memes for personal use.

Imgflip Meme Generator may appeal if a library of more than one million templates matters more than watermark-free free exports; its free plan has ads and an Imgflip watermark. Meme Studio is another free web alternative with no registration or watermarks. MagicMeme offers a free classic editor and catalog browsing, but guest AI use is one batch a day and guest downloads carry a watermark. memeOS is a free option for iOS and web with unlimited memes, no watermark, no signup, and PNG downloads.

Verdict

Choose JustMeme if you want free, unlimited, watermark-free memes with AI-assisted captioning and useful manual text controls—or need a keyless API for a modest project. Its strongest case is how much creator and developer functionality it makes available without signup or payment. Look elsewhere if your API workload needs more than 60 requests per minute per IP or you need assurance that meme source images are cleared for reuse.
